The all plastic knob assembly sets the synchronization between the amount of spark advance and the throttle opening. There is a procedure in the service manual about it. If I remember correctly, with the motor in gear on the water and the rpm exactly at 900, you set the knob to just start the timer base advance movement.<br /><br />On later motors, there was a stainless steel screw and locknut sticking out that advanced or retarded the timer base to set the idle rpm.
