Re: not again!!!

Have you ruled out the possibility of a faulty ignition switch? All of the engine grounds clean and tight?

Re: not again!!!

it almost seems as though i blew the new pack but i am unsure how

does any one know a way to convert it to battery cdi ignition?

Re: not again!!!

What happened when you unplugged the harness and tested for spark?

Re: not again!!!

i have just jumped starter with cannon unplugged with no result
the only thing i did just before i lost fire is clean out the fuse holder on block
but it is working (without fuse it wont spin by key)

Re: not again!!!

Describe "no result". Does that mean it spun over but had no spark or you couldnt get it to spin over?

Re: not again!!!

new stator has output of 256v is this too high
the book just says 150v(or more)

Hold the phone! My mistake! I misread the post.....thought it said 77 115.

Never mind! Its got to have 12 volts to the pack on the 71.

Sorry! Sheril said I need new specticals......

Re: not again!!!

You're correct ,charge coil output should be around 150V and powerpack output should be 125v minimum.

Re: not again!!!

any one have a suggestion for a different style ignition that can be used
i have already bought everything for a 75 and it
aint gonna work
is there a newer style that can be fitted on this old motor?

Re: not again!!!

So we do have a 1975 115 -- right?

If so, lets go back to checking spark with the cannon plug undone and it has no spark. Is that with the plugs in or out? What gap on the spark checker?

Re: not again!!!

TX..... That engine needs to turn over at least 300 rpm in order for the stator to generate approximately 300 AC volts to energize the powerpack.

If you had spark a hour ago and changed nothing, it would seem to me that possibly you're checking the spark with the plugs still in the engine? If so, that just doesn't work. The plugs must be out in order to check the spark.

When actually starting the engine, usually one plug fires resulting in a instant increase of rpms that in turn results in the electronics firing all of the other plugs (keeping it simple).

If, even with the plugs out there is no ignition and the cranking rpms are low, the usual cause is loose or tight but dirty connections somewhere, a battery in poor condition, or a failing starter.

Re: not again!!!

i have been checking for spark with plugs out
the battery is fully charged and starter is fine
the motor is spinning fast enough (i believe)
but i have no spark

With advise from all of you i have come to this conclusion The stator is generating too much voltage that has killed the power pack.
am i wrong in this assumption?

Re: not again!!!

TX.... It's impossible for the stator to develop too much voltage which could damage the powerpack.

However, should there be a mild short in the ignition switch or any other area of the wirings that might allow even a extremely slight amount of voltage to encounter the black/yellow wire that is on the back of the ignition switch, that voltage will destroy the powerpack quite quickly.

That black/yellow wire is the kill circuit leading to the powerpack and will not tolerate any voltage. Easy to check.... disconnect that wire at the powerpack, hook up a volt meter (set to lowest reading) between that wire and a ground, turn the ignition key to the ON position.

If any voltage reading is indicated, even a fraction of a volt, find the source and correct it (usually the ignition switch).
