Evinrude 90/65 jet won't reach max rpm

I was trolling the other day and ran my evinrude 90/65 jet for about 3 1/2 hours at low speed, my jet ended up getting clogged with grass and seaweed. I pulled what I thought was all the junk out of the bottom of the grate and pulled the plugs and replaced them because they were fouled. Now the next day I take the boat out and now the motor will not hit full rpms, its at about 4600 when it was at 5300. It also seems that its not as powerful from a stop to full plane. I don't know if I should take anything apart to check for more debris in the jet somewhere so any suggestions will be appreciated.

hello<br /> yes you may have more junk. more likely a plug wire knocked off or a muffler that got damaged. I have seen the muffler do really strange things and fool even experienced techs into repacing stators and packs.test all the basics. did you overheat it when the impeller clogged? it gets its cooling water through the jet pump assy.test spark,compression and fuel. do all the basics first then start hunting <br />Good luck and keep posting

Thanks for the reply, Ill try to keep posting but i am pretty ignorant when it comes to boat motors, i just picked up a manual for it to help me out a little.

Make sure that nothing got wound around the impeller shaft above the impeller itself. If there was fishing line or stringy seaweed and/or grass, it could have gotten wound around. Jet removal is not a major operation, so it will be well within your ability to inspect. If you take the impeller off, make sure you count the shaft shims and replace them just like they came off.

That's alot of rpm loss...make sure all your spark plugs are working properly...just a Thought

Okay I am trying to take out the impeller to inspect for anything tangled up in there and I cant get it out, i tried tapping it counter clockwise like the manual suggested but it wont budge free and I dont want to hit it too hard in fear of breaking something. Any body else have this problem before?
