I'm in the process of sealing my lower unit on my 1991 225 JOHNSON. I removed the drive shaft housing How do I remove the old seals without damanging the bearing? Will the bearing come out with the old seal? Am I looking at two seals or one?
Thanks
Stoked not

Re: Drive shaft seal replacement

When I posted last night I was hoping some could give me hand. I might have to take it to a OMC dealer. I have the drive shaft seal housing / bearing out of the lower unit in my hand but I'm not sure how to remove the old seals. Can anyone recomend. Should I just peel it out or should it be punched out from the back where the bearings our visiable?

Thanks

Can I get a seal puller from a Auto store or a OMC dealer. How's it work?

I removed the housing that holds the seals. (sqaure box with 4 bolts under the water pump) I slid the housing up and over the drive shaft and have it out on the bench. Now I'm trying to remove the seals.

Q: Is the seal puller used to pull the seal out of the housing or is it used to pull the housing from the lower unit / drive shaft?

I'm sure some people will disagree, but I'll tell you what my friends and I do:

use a cheap little propane torch... Heat the aluminum housing and it should be a piece of cake to install/remove bearings without squishing them or scraping things up. For removal, tap the heated part on a wooden block.

You can remove the seals with heat and a wooden dowell too, but the rubber will get burned. I just use an automotive seal-installer to drive the new seals in...

hello stoked.
to remove the seals open your vise jaws just large enough to allow the seal to pass through. turn the housing so the bearing is up and the seals are down. carefully use a wide flat screw driver and a hammer to knock the seals out. there are 2 seals in some and a sigle double lip in others. I dont even try to figgure out which is which anymore until I have to replace them. I use a seal puller made by suzuki that works wonderful. be careful of the pointed seal puller sold at auto stores I see the housing get scared once a month by people that allowed the point to contact the aluminium housing while they pried the seal out. no reason to remove the bearing unless it is bad. good luck and keep posting

Re: Drive shaft seal replacement

Thanks to all for youe advise. I GOT IT. Knocked it out with a srew driver like a few of you mentioned. I was just a little timid. Just needed to put some *** behind it. They came flying out. They came out so fast that I hope I put the new seals in correctly the springs are around the seal are visible. Hope that's right.

I Last question, I hope. When I removed the drive shaft housing it was mounted to the lower unit with 4 bolts and a gasket. The parts diagram I have dosn't show this gasket and the seal kit dosn't have it. Do I need a gasket or did someone put the original one on.

Thanks to all.

Stoked Not

Re: Drive shaft seal replacement

hello again
the lower seal goes in with the spring down. the upper seal has a protruding lip and the spring goes up. this bearing housing has no gasket just an oring around it.if it had a gasket it would change the shim pack thickness of the pinion gear.
good luck and keep us posted

Rodbolt,

Thanks for your advise, My seals are on the way you desribe them. Not sure why the housing had a gasket. You make a good point about changing the shim pack. Hope it dosn't leak. If you ever get up this way I'm ready to go fishing. Were heading into the best part of the year. Always looking for a buddie to go fishing. Hope you made out ok with the storm.
Tight lines
Stoked Not

Re: Drive shaft seal replacement

stoked not,
I am doing the exact same job - replacing the 2 drive shaft seals on a 1993 88hp Johnson. I used a screwdriver and tapped out the two old ones, but am having trouble getting the new ones to go in! Any advice on tips doing without damaging the new seals would be appreciated.

Re: Drive shaft seal replacement

I used some motor oil. She went with a couple light taps with the hammer.
