I have finally taken my 115 HP motor out after redoing all the gauges and rewiring the entire boat. The tach wouldn't work at first and thanks to this forum I found all the testing know how to figure out the rectifier was probably bad. It was as now the tach goes. The original tach that was on there wasn't a Teleflex but the one I got was new and had a 4th terminal labeled Evinrude/Johnson. I hooked that up and did get a reaction and a reading at idle. How accurate it was is what this post is about.

I think it was set on 6 tonight but the RPM's went over 7000 when I knew they weren't that high. I quickly pulled it out of the dash and switched it to 12 as I think I just imitated what the factory tach had on it. Now the tach topped out at 4000 RPM's around 40 miles an hour. I think that is too low but I'm not really sure if that's what I want or not. Motor sounds fine and I can trim it up to get it up to 4200 but I just want to hear one of you guru's say what I should have. Since this tach has the Evinrude/Johnson terminal is it possible I don't need this for my particular motor? My Teleflex literature says tach should be set on 12.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...

Gary

I would think the the Evin/John sticker is not the termial marker, the sticker just means it will fit those engines. The termials are marked on the base of the tach, most of the time.

So the tach has 4 terminals to hook to with -, +, sending connection and Evinrude/Johnson terminal and you are saying to ignore the Evinrude/Johnson terminal and just hook to sending terminal? What is the E/J terminal for?

Thanks... Gary

Thats what I said, but I could be wrong, The 4th termial should be a light termial, if tach is lighted.

Light terminal is seperate. This looks like one of the terminals to power the tach... I will post a picture... Thanks... Gary

Here's a picture of the back of the gauge. Ignore the black wire that fell on to gauage as that is a ground wire to the water gauge that I was changing out today.

http://www.findmall.com/photo/guvner/back-of-tach.jpg

There are four terminals for power and connections. If you assume the gauge is turned where the light is at the top you can navigate with my description. You can barely make out the letters "Send" on the farthest right terminal. J/E is being blocked but you can see my sending wire is hooked to it. The positive wire is to the farthest left wire and the ground is in the top middle of these 4 terminals. Above that is the one positive wire for the lights.

Thanks... Gary

Send teleflex email and ask them. The tach looks like an older tach. I dont know this one.

It's a 3 wire Sierra replacement rectifier. As a side note the rectifier came with instructions that either yellow wire was interchangeable. Bought from local Evinrude dealer...

Thanks... Gary

The ignition wire is the only power wire you should have hookedup. The tach should be set on 6P for the 78' 115. You should also have a tach harness with 3 wires, a black, purple, and grey. The center bottom terminal is for battery ignition types, and there should be no wire to that one. The pictures don't show the colors well, but I believe purple to ign., grey to send and blk to ground. The light terminal is of course the top. when you turn the key on, the tach should go to zero...... :)
