Model TJ40ELENJ Serial# G03140114
After running, I am seeing black oil leaking from the exaust that smells like burnt oil. In a few days the oil stops leaking. Two years ago the vro evidently malfunctioned, the alarm also failed to sound which, resulted in a very expensive rebuild at the boat dealer. They insisted on installing a new vro and new sensors, while I wanted to disconnect and pre mix the oil. They said they would not guarantee the rebuild, if I disconnected. Could the problem I am now having be an over oiling problem? Should I disconnect the vro and premix?

People are always commenting about disconnecting VRO's. A search should turn up many opinions. I'm glad my 1989 40 hp tracker is non-VRO. I've yet to forget to put oil in the gas.
My Johnson owners manual or service manual describes how to disconnect VRO, so I don't think disconnecting should void any warrantees

Howdy, Fish&rap.

Your engine is a '92.

Some partially burnt oil in the exhaust is normal.

It is unusual for VRO to over oil unless there is a fuel pumping problem. Result: "Right amount" of oil but not enough gas to match it going to the carb, giving an over-rich mix in the carb(s).

You may have a weak fuel supply or pump.

Your dealer blackmailed you into replacing the VRO. If you don't want it, go to a different wrench.

Good luck. :)

A failing VRO will generally "Over-oil". JB is correct that some unburned fuel/oil is common at the exhaust. Could be the fuel side of the pump was failing, in which case it's your decision to replace the VRO pump or just go with a conventional pump and pre-mix. Either way, you should be good to go for a long time with the new VRO pump. You can always disconnect the VRO oil side and pre-mix at a later date.

Hello
could also be a rich fuel problem and your seaing unburned fuel/oil from the exhaust housing. when was the last tune up and carb tweaking ?
good luck and I agree. you were blackmailed. if my customers dont want it I have no problem removing VRO. at least with no VRO on a rebuild I dont have to warrenty any lubrication failures :) .

Thanks for the responces,
I feel somewhat better I was afraid that the vro was going again. Rodbolt, I have not had the engine tuned since rebuild and have not really used it much, but it has sat idle for a year in storage while I moved to FL., I would like to tweak the carbs but have been afraid since the shop said I could screw up the engine if I got too lean. Is this true ?
