Re: Why this is the largest engine forum????

It's because there are more friendly posters here...the other forums are have only rowdy people!

I'm just kidding of course.....ALL of the forums have great folks and a wealth of knowledge for sure.

The shear numbers of Johnson and Evinrude motors that have been sold over the years probably accounts for the popularity. The dependability factor is a testament to the engineering of a well built motor. So, more motors sold, mean more happy owners. This is just my opinion.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...... :D :D :D

Well it could be due to the fact that Johnson motors have been around for 100 years  :)

kclark

I agree with both of these fine gentlemen.

The number of JohnnyRudes in service far exceeds all other makes, and they are very commonly serviced by their owners.

Thanks...

Still wondering, in a scale of 1 to 10 (being 10 the best), how would you answer the following:

John/rude
------------
Reliability:
Easy maintenance:
Performance:

Mercury
------------
Reliability:
Easy maintenance:
Performance:

Yamaha
------------
Reliability:
Easy maintenance:
Performance:

Re: Why this is the largest engine forum????

Here is my opinion (Like Armpits)...

If you had to own an Outboard Engine I would definately choose Johnnyrude....IF....IF.... they are maintained as suggested by the manufacturer.

Many people...like myself...have bought outboards from Ahole's who lack the intelligence to maintain an outboard engine properly and then sell it to a unsuspecting buyer. (proud owner of a 96 225hp Ocean Pro who had to rebuild 1 month after buying it used from an individual who will get his someday)...anyway...after the BAD experience I would have to say that overall the johnnyrude outboards are VERY dependable as long as they are maintained....I guess you could say that about any outboard....they 96 ocean pro runs great and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Just my 2 cents.

Well I guess I'll pipe in on the trust and reliability of the John/Rude engines that I have owned as well.As primarily a saltwater fisherman, people that have grown up on the Texas coast have come to know John/Rude products as ones who were built to weather the elements and provide consistent overall reliabilty. Those of you who have experienced the same know that it is sort of a brotherhood. Not unlike Ford or Chevy disciples.

Heck someone even wrote a country song that mentioned his Evinrude.Who was that? :D :p

Here is my two cents. I really don't have a preferance between the OMC products and Merc or even the fine Japanese products. I have and do own and use both Mercs and johnrudes dating from 1990 to the early fifties. The one thing I like best about the Johnyrudes is the fact that you can find parts for them just about any where. I believe this has alot to do with their popularity.

Re: Why this is the largest engine forum????

I think J/E engines are the easiest motors to work on, which encourages owner maintenance & therefore postings to this forum. You can do a lot with just a harmonic damper puller and a set of SAE hand tools (and a manual of course).

IMHO, Mercs are good engines, but old Karl had some oddball designs. Yamahas are awesome - they sure know how to build a 2stroke engine - but ever notice how many of their earlier designs were based on OMC 3s and V4s?

Don't know too much about Honda outboards, but if their as well-built as their cars & motocrossers, everybody in the industry is in for some stiff competition.

Re: Why this is the largest engine forum????

In my opinion...

I think it's safe to say that Johnson/Evinrude has sold more motors in the last 50 years than any other brand. Perhaps more than all the others combined. I think also a safe to say that of these motors sold there is a higher ratio of these motors still in operation than the other guys. Look around the lakes, rivers, and seas and you will still see many old OMC motors still perfoming reliably, more so than any other brand. The reason there are more posts in this forum are not due to any reliability issues. It is simply because there is more OMC motors out there.

I'm happy I have a 225 Evinrude !!! It certainly looks like a robust engine (it is big when compared to others!!!). It looks simple when you take out the cover, dunno about the others, but to me that motivates me to lear about it.

Hello guys,

maybe You are interested in a German opinion on Johnson.
My personal experience with the 30hp within 3 years:
The engine already has died two times on sea, at least one time was quite dangerous, because I got into offlanding wind and was driven onto the sea between Sardinia and Italy.
The reason for it was a short-cut in the stop switch ?!
The second time the engine died for unknown reason (overheating ?, failing powerpack ?).
I couldn't restart it for 1 hour.

Sometimes it seems to me the technique of this engine is from ancient times.
Though old simple technique must not be generally unreliable I must say I'm not convinced about it.

Most people in Germany seem to think so too because they favour other brands (Yamaha, Honda)

Nordy

Re: Why this is the largest engine forum????

My opinion is that EVERY engine will last long and strong if taken care of enough. So the good ones are those that can take a beating and be put away wet. Good on milage, light weight, and powerful. I have had a few j-e and one 2hp suzuki. That little suzuki was amazing! It was salty for a long time and sat for god knows how logn when I got her. A little farting around and it fired right up and started first pull ever since! It was as small and light as a trolling motor, it had ALL the push you expect from a 2 horse and more. AND it just barely sipped the 100-1 mix. I was very impressed with this little guy. As for motorcycles Honda has always been a great choice for me. Their little OHV knockoffs of our briggs are GREAT, generators pumps blowers weed whackers. all wonderful peices of machinery, But I have not had the luxery of a honda outboard so I cannot speak for or against. So It seems my opinion is actually with the imports, allthought with enough TLC anything can be reliable, right?
Oh and I am a firm beleiver in "they dont build 'em like they used to" phrase.
C

Just so we will not fail to give credit where credit is due, I can't help reminding Nordy that the ficht technology that probably bankrupted OMC came from the experts in - you guessed it - Germany.
Today OMC belongs to Bombardier - a Canadian company.
See: Credits
