Crossflow V4 starting problem

I have been having a problem with my 89 1.6 litre OMC crossflow V4. Sometimes it runs fine, sometimes it won't even fire. I have slightly low compression in one cylinder but I doubt it is low enough to cause this problem. I don't think it is an ignition problem because I have 2 complete sets of ignition components and it seems to run about the same with either set. Also I know I am getting spark from all 4 plugs. I seem to be getting plenty of fuel and at the times it won't fire it won't even fire if I spray starting fluid directly into the carbs. This problem has been going on for some time and has me stumped. This afternoon I came up with a wild idea but I don't know if it is possible. Could something be plugging up the exhaust? Is this possible on an outboard? Does anybody have any other ideas?

Re: Crossflow V4 starting problem

Sound like ign. problems that may not involve the coils. I'm no electrical expert so I can't even suggest where to start, but you may want to start a new topic asking Joe Reeves for help. From what I've seen, he's the man on the electrical............ :)

I swaped out coils, powerpack, stator, trigger wires and rectifier with same results. I know it sounds electronic but I have spent the last month checking everything electronic and switched parts back and forth.

When it gets in one of its moods and wont fire, check spark with the plugs in. If it only has spark with the plugs out it may be turning over too slow. Check your battery cables and connections. I usually just hook up a short set thats known to be good to another battery close by.

Also dont overlook the flywheel. Since you have another complete set of ignition, just try another wheel.

Good luck!

You may just be on to something. I just tried to pull the flywheel and that sucker is tight. I just had it off a couple of days ago so I know it shouldn't be that tight. I'm thinking maybe the key in the keyway is worn or partly sheared off and the flywheel has been sliping and shifting postitons, I believe that would cause the same symptoms I am having, when it is in the right position the engine would run good and when it is out of position I doubt it would fire at all. Anyway I will try to pull that flywheel off again in the morning.

Gator,

STOP using starting fluid in that engine. It has no lubricant and will destroy your engine in short order.

If you have to spray anything in the carb throats, mix up some 50:1 premix and use that.
