I have two differant carb #'s on the engine they match 1 set to port 1 set to starboard. the #'s Are 397341 mx 10 bl, with a 20 idle 28M and 61D main. the other sets are 398212 mx 5 bl,with 16 idle 28 medium and 61d main. My question is are jets in the corret carbs and are the carbs on the correct side of motor. Also as you look at the back of the motor is the left side port side :confused: Any help would be appreciated, as I am geetting conflicting info fron the dealers in the area. Thanks inadvance all the icfo I have gotten off the site has been invaluble.

Re: 1986 140hp evinrude carbs

lets sea if i can help-
im looking at a 1987 CU parts manual that was printed in oct 1986. your idle, intermediate & high speed #s combination seem to match the setup listed below for a 87 model year 140
-
port carb assy #397907 (edited with #s)
idle-----------28
intermediate---20
high speed-----61D
-
starboard carb assy #397908
idle-----------28
intermediate---16
high speed-----61D
-
if it was me i would set them up like that.
as hooty said-
vro/starter side is port (left)
throttle/shift cable side is starboard (right)
-
even if you decided to keep the orifices (jets) as you described above i would still put the
carbs with the #16 on starboard
carbs with the #20 on port
-
hope that helps

Re: 1986 140hp evinrude carbs

Okam.... I can understand the confusion you encountered by the dealers. The carburetor numbers you mention have been superceeded as follows:

397341 superceeded to 397907
398212 superceeded to 397908

The superceeding resulted in a change of jets. However, with those numbers imprinted (397341 & 398212) you have the original 1986 carburetors.

Note that the outer small jets are air bleed jets which meter air, not fuel, and are set up as follows:

Top small jet = Intermediate jet
Bottom small jet = Slow speed jet

---

The 1986 carburetors (397341 & 398212, yours) call for the following jet setup.

PORT
Intermediate = 20
Slow = 30
High = 61D

STARBORD
Intermediate = 16
Slow = 30
High = 61D

---

As 2kBoat has stated as listed in his 1987 book, and me quoting from a later 1988 book, The superceeded carburetors (397907 & 397908) call for the following setup.

1988 140hp Carburetors (superceeding carbs)

PORT
Intermediate = 20
Slow = 28
High = 61D

STARBOARD
Intermediate = 16
Slow = 28
High = 61D

The only difference between the carburetors is that the Slow Speed Jet (Idle Air Bleed) between the 1986 carb (30) and the later superceeded carb (28) is that the ID has been closed down two thousands which would increase the idle fuel flow.

Bottom line is to setup your carburetors as 2KBoat and Hooty have suggested, then you can change the Slow Speed Jets (the bottom idle air bleed) if you like to see if there's a increase or decrease in performance. Good luck.

not to get to confussing for you okam.
-
this is for me- Mr.Reeves are you going by a service update for the 1986 carbs dated in 1988?
or a parts manual?
-
im just asking for my own info
i have the 1988 140 carbs through the model year showing
port & star
idle #41
inter #54
hspd #63D
thats from the preliminary edition in sept 87 to final edition in may 88.
#s also carry through to the 89 140.

2K BOAT.... I'm simply going by the parts manual to keep things simple. Those carbs, horsepower, etc are confusing enough to the general boater without throwing in any existing updates (if I have them, I have no idea where they are). However, my 1989 parts book lists the 140hp as having the jet sizes you mention in your last post.

Also, one has to keep in mind that the 1986/87 had a bore of 3.500 whereas the 1988 came out with the 3.685 bore.

Thanks for the great help 2K and joe Reeves. I think It all makes sense now, and why the dealers have had problems. Whenever I get stuck, this forum is great. :) Any good sources for jets?
Thanks again

Re: 1986 140hp evinrude carbs

i would simlpy place the carbs with the jets you have.
according to your 1st post you have the idle & intermediate jets reversed.
set them up as descibed above preferably after a rebuild and go from there.
the price on the jets the last time i got them was almost $7 each.
here are the part #s
#16 - 333243
#20 - 324005
#28 - 322936
#30 - 317473
61D - 319907
-
you mite be able to get them from an online source, but i found the dealers in my area to carry them in stock.
just trying to help.
-
my apologies to you J. Reeves!
at no time was i trying to say you were trying to confuse anything. i know you have more knowledge than most of the persons on this forum.
i was just curious for myself as i have been trying to find as much info on the 1988 140 as i can. so i had hoped you had something i didnt.
sorry for asking.

2K Boat..... No apology necessary. I knew and understood exactly what you were asking and I took no offense.
