Re: 1986 140hp evinrude carbs
Okam.... I can understand the confusion you encountered by the dealers. The carburetor numbers you mention have been superceeded as follows:

397341 superceeded to 397907
398212 superceeded to 397908

The superceeding resulted in a change of jets. However, with those numbers imprinted (397341 & 398212) you have the original 1986 carburetors.

Note that the outer small jets are air bleed jets which meter air, not fuel, and are set up as follows:

Top small jet = Intermediate jet
Bottom small jet = Slow speed jet

---

The 1986 carburetors (397341 & 398212, yours) call for the following jet setup.

PORT
Intermediate = 20
Slow = 30
High = 61D

STARBORD
Intermediate = 16
Slow = 30
High = 61D

---

As 2kBoat has stated as listed in his 1987 book, and me quoting from a later 1988 book, The superceeded carburetors (397907 & 397908) call for the following setup.

1988 140hp Carburetors (superceeding carbs)

PORT
Intermediate = 20
Slow = 28
High = 61D

STARBOARD
Intermediate = 16
Slow = 28
High = 61D

The only difference between the carburetors is that the Slow Speed Jet (Idle Air Bleed) between the 1986 carb (30) and the later superceeded carb (28) is that the ID has been closed down two thousands which would increase the idle fuel flow.

Bottom line is to setup your carburetors as 2KBoat and Hooty have suggested, then you can change the Slow Speed Jets (the bottom idle air bleed) if you like to see if there's a increase or decrease in performance. Good luck.
