Tach drops to 0

When running my 2000 Johnson Ocean Pro 115, the tach will show proper RPM up to about 1500 and then drop to 0 beyond that unless I drop RPM. I can gun the motor quickly and the tach will spike up to a high RPM reading but then drop to 0 until I idle back again. Any ideas?

rectifier or stator, maybe both.

Sounds like alt./ rectifier.<br />Check to see if your battery is being charged.<br />Make sure your harness has good contacts.
