Re: idle - starting problems

2k boat:

I am aware of the internal check valves in the intake manifold...I doubt there is a problem with those valves because the reman ph company would have used new internal valves...however, I am going to replace the external recirc fittings and hoses.

No problem about asking the other question...I plan on using AUGIDAWG's method of adjusting the timing if necessary.

Anyway, I orderd the parts today and an ACTUAL shop manual from Bombardier for my specific motor...the Clymer manual leaves alot out.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Thanks again!

Re: idle - starting problems

my only concern with that would be you said the mech took the new recirc valves out - saying they didnt work- & put the old ones in.
-
the internal ones arent actually internal until the intake goes on.
(they are on the mating surface)
they are just as easy to remove as the screw in.
hopefully he made sure they were actually there.
-
yea i have 2 clymers in a box. its a shame that i paid for them.
-
look at the parts manual you got they usually change through out the year.
on my 88 140 i have a preliminary & a final edition.
it just helped me to verify part #s.
with out the service updates atleast i know what the parts were changed to at the end of the model year.
-
i ended up with some 185-225 & 250-300 parts manuals.
thats how i was able to cross part#s and put a 1995 225tx bracket assembly onto my 1988 140 mid section.
-
but as far as i know they would have interchanged anyway.
-
i like the simplicity of the 90 degree LV's.
but at times i wished i would have stuck with my original plan of putting a 1982(+ or -) 125hp
powerhead on the 175hp mid section.
my boat had been overpowered with a 1983(+/-) 175hp.
i had everything to do it, but didnt know how easy it would have been.
then just dealing with a V6 1.86 gear vrs a V4 2.00 gear would have been harder.
-
naturally i asked this site, but really could not get a strait answer if it was possible.
-
probably due to my judgmental attitude when i first started asking about the differences in 125/120 force motors.
as much trouble as i have had from this johnson, at times i wished i had a force.
atleast they had a reputation for problems.
-
i just try to help as much as i can, even though i am not an expert.

Re: idle - starting problems

I know these subjects go a little a stray.

Remember. I know a lot about 2 strokes, I've raced motorcycles for years, I know a lot about 4 strokes and ignition systems.
BUT, I am a rookie to these Johnsons, and for the life of me, can't figure out why they put so many complicated systems on a simple reed-valve-piston port-engine, and still use a mechanical CDI ignition system.
Take my suggestions with a grain of salt. I hate to let anyone work on my engines, and this method works for me. If someone can explain a better way to make my engine idle at the same rpm in-or-out of gear, please let us know. I feel there must be a better way, but the manuals sure don't make it very clear. I think the 30+ year mechanics figured this one out, but the manuals never were upgraded.

oops- sorry was just tapping at keys.
-
augidawg i think your suggestion is great.
at $75+ shop time i am willing to do your suggestion 1st, then ill try it the manual way (as in the past).
these days every little trick helps.
my last shop time cost me $300 and a powerhead.
-
so as not to take up wil's space.
how about some ideas on a fabricating a spark checker at my post 'update 1988 140tx powerhead'.
thanx

Re: idle - starting problems

The last time (and only time) I went to the shop, it cost me $1,600 for all new electronics, and 2 batteries. They could not tell me why all of the wires cought on fire.
But, after visiting this site, I found out it was probubly due to loose battery connections, or underfilled/bad batteries, or rectifier overheating because of air bubble effect.

I don't trust any other mechanics, and sometimes not even myself. (Sierra Nevada Pale Ale effect)
I went over the engine and components, and discovered that the new batteries were installed with wing nuts (factory Johnson manual says that is a no-no), 2 of the battery hold down screws were missing, the timing pointer was 2 degrees off, the upper breather hose to the intake baffle was not in the hole, and the one of the baffle mounting screws had pulled apart. (meaning the baffle was about to fall off)

Bottom line:
If one of the wingnuts had come loose, I would have just poured $1,600 down the drain.

"I may be slow, but I sure screw up a lot". (that is their shop motto)

"If you want something done right,,,,,,,,,,," (you know the rest)

Re: idle - starting problems

Thought everyone would want an update...I got the boat back from the mech today and he said the idle was too rich so he leaned it out. He said this would not effect the midrange or WOT as these were fixed jets.

I'll get to test it out this weekend...we'll see

Thanks to all for the advice.

Re: idle - starting problems

Hello everyone!

Took the boat out sat. and the motor DEFINATELY idle better...when i put in gear it doesn't stall anymore...i guess the carb adjutment resolved the problem...or maybe it was the new plugs?...these were the only two changes i made, between the two of them it took care of the idle problem.

Anyway, i noticed that the motor was running a little hotter (per the temp gauge) than it has been. Would the two adjustments i made have caused this? I'm running the exact plugs (champions 78's) that i have been. The only difference there is now there gapped at .35 instead of .30

Any thoughts,

Thanks
