sorry sunbird, i was under the assumption that if you didnt have them grounded it would hurt something. (especially the powerpack)
-
good luck with the 120.

2K don't worry about it. I appreciate the input.

I am going to get a torque wrench this week so I can pull the flywheel off. I haven't checked the manual yet, but do I also need a special puller and something to hold the flywheel while I loosen the nut? I'll keep you posted on my progress.

best thing to use is an impact wrench, believe me thats easy.
the problem is getting flywheel off.
not really a problem unless you had an idiot like the one who sold me my motor and used loctite high strength red on the flywheel nut.
from there it seeped into the taper, or he put it there.
i used a harmonic balancer puller to pull off.
actually i destroyed the 1st one.
-
the center nut is 1-7/16 in. i got the socket (great neck) from autozone. for less than $10- it was just rite to fit for the ID of flywheel. you have to look at the sockets to get the thinnest wall.
i did get a holding tool, from K/D tools(actually a flywheel turner) but it did the job for less than $20.
-
when i put it back on, i used an old damaged head from the spare block i have with a piece of 2X4 to
hold it in place.
then i put resurfaced heads on.
-
book says to retorque nut to 140 to 150ft lbs.

Just wanted say THANK YOU and update everyone whou provided advice - it was the stator. Took the boat out yesterday and she ran great. But would you believe it, when I got back to dock, the trim motor crapped out and just when I was starting to like this boat again.

2K - I think I read a post somewhere that talked about just replacing the brushes. I may give that a try first before shelling our more cash. I think that is all my problem is because if I tap the motor with a hammer while pushing the tilt button, the motor works. Good luck with yours.
