i have a 115 horse v 4 johnson. ser#j5696041, model #j115tlcnb. . the friction is so loose that the motor dumps left or right on its own. cannot leave go the wheel for any reason, and cannot find any adjustment on motor. is it in fact on the motor, or possibly on the steering? afraid to touch anything without knowing what to do and where to look. any info will be greatly appreciated. also no help from local dealers, so i'm stuck unless someone here helps me. thanks all....bob

Re: friction adjustment

If your boat doesn't have no feedback steering box then you will feel some pulling depending on speed and trim angle. However,if the boat seems to primarily pull in one direction you can adjust the trim tab on the lower unit above the prop.Move it toward the direction of pull and retighten until you reach a suitable adjustment.

Re: friction adjustment

not sure on the type of steering system. 1st time with this setup but have some type of gearbox mounted under steering wheel and has a rod running off to the side under the consul about 18 to 24 in. long. is this rack and pinion?? sorry i'm so nieve on this, but as i said, its a new system for me. also has a machine screw with a loknut on what i think is the gearbox. does that help any? anyway, thanks for your help, i really do appreciate it....bob

Re: friction adjustment

Also, look on the port side of the lower unit up high for a friction screw that tightens up the resistence. Some have it, some don't!

Re: friction adjustment

RC581 , possibility of a adjustment nut dead center on the motor just above the clamp bracket. Kind of hidden. nevjb

Re: friction adjustment

I'd like to reopen this old thread as I have the same problem on a 1993 evinrude 120hp. I looked on the engine and the steering unit under the dash and can't find any adjustment. The steering cable is new. I just recently got this boat, but I didn't think this would be hard to fix.
I can't let go of the wheel at any speed or it will veer to either side. The faster I'm going the faster it spins. When out of the water, engine moves very easy. Any tilt up in trim and it will flop right down, left or right.
Thanks for looking and any help.
