Friend of mine is giving me a 1972 Evinrude 25HP. Not a tiller model. My questions are this. He said it needs a prop shaft and seals?? Also, it has no controls for the motor. I'd like to put it on my 16 foot duck boat.

Anyway, where can I go to get parts for this. What should I look out for. Is it worth the repairs?

Thanks

Joe

Hi Baby
The reason the motor is being gifted is because the cost of repairs far excedes the value of the unit. How ever this motor would make for a dandy duck hunting and fishing motor. If you are a good scrounger and can find a used prop shaft on a deal. Scrounge up the rest of the stuff you need on deal. Use the repair shop that has the lowest, unbeatable labor rates (your own shop). You might be able to come out with a winner. I would strongly suggest that you first obtain a manual. This will pay for it's self several times over. Another good point is that there are lots of parts for these motors around. The deal is, the faster you want them,(parts) the more they cost, and the harder they are to find. When you don't really need them, they seem to be in your way.

Whoah, I couldn't believe what I was reading. I thought I was the only one who was still running one of these motors. I have the same motor and I too ran into the same problem with parts. You can find them though if you look. The Mastertech Marine Website can get you those parts. He sent me a list of parts that I needed within 2 days. I blew the exhaust baffle plate in mine and top cylinder started sucking water. It ruined the needle valves, piston wrist pin and rod, and scuffed the piston pretty good. To repair mine correctly would take about 300-400 if I did the labor myself. Entire motor is dissassembled and laying in my shed now. It was a great little motor. Always cranked right up and never missed a lick. Only way I knew something was wrong was by pulling the plugs and finding water on the top plug. Instead of repairing that one, I spent a little more and bought a 16ft Nitro Bass Boat, 60HP Johnson and trailer from a friend at work.
Don't know what I will do with the motor now. The lower unit is still in one piece and does not have any problems, if you're interested I could show it to you if you're not far. I live in BayStLouis, MS

Howdy Freeze,

If you and Babybooha dont strike up a deal on that lower unit, hollar at me. I have a 73 evinrude 25hp Mod # 25302 thats got a bad clutch dog and foward gear. I suspect that the lower unit would be a match. What is the model # on your motor?

bruceinplano@yahoo.com
