I have Bought a boat this fall with a 1989 110hp Evinrude. From reading some of the forums I have gathered that that when you turn the ignition on that the warning alarm is supose to do a self test, mine does not.I have cheked the horn and it does sound and i have also grounded the tan wire going to the temperature switches on the heads which will also sound the alarm. My VRO is a three wire.Is there a way to check the no alarm sound at the VRO pump to make sure this warning sound will work.is it supose to do a self check when ignition key turned on.
Thanks guys.

Re: VRO Pump

I have the same year gt150 with the 3 wire vro2 pump, and I was told that model did not have an alarm when when the key is first turned to start. It sounds like everything is working OK on yours.

Be safe,
Duck L.

Re: VRO Pump

Thanks duckload.
So are you saying that my three wire VRO pump does not have a no oil alarm on it or are you saying it does not go through the test when ignition is turned on.
Thanks.

Re: VRO Pump

The way I understand it, my '89 (and perhaps yours) does NOT go through a test when the ignition is turned on. There is a simple test you can do to hear if the VRO low oil warning is working or not. I disconnected mine and do not remember what it is though. Perhaps someone can chime in on the subject.

Be safe,

Duck L.

Reach down in the tank and push the float down with a screwdriver and the ignition in the on position. That will tell you if the low oil alarm is working or not. Or unplug the wires to the tank and the alarm should go off.

Re: VRO Pump

It is the warning horn, not the VRO, that does the self test when you turn the key to ON. About 1993 they came out with the self test horn and you can tell by the black ground wire that comes off it. Unless the horn has been updated, an '89 will not self test.

A 3 wire VRO has the NO OIL warning, but in later years, 1992, they added a 4th wire, 12V, for better reliability. IF you want to check the VRO warning system, hook up a portable tank with 50:1 then disconnect the oil line at the pump. Run the motor until the horn sounds, it does take a while to pump out the residual oil before the alarm sounds.
