Thanks for all the help on my other post. By the way, I checked the thermostats and 1 was wide open. Hit the nail right on the head.

Since we had the engine partially open, we decided to check one of the heads. We thought maybe one of the rubber stoppers might be compressed and blocking the water flow. We found abrasions and some aluminum scrapings on two of the cylinders in the one head. We have not looked at the other one yet. I was told that this happens because the rings are bad. I was told to replace all the pistons and chug along.

Is this good advice? What is the risk of just keeping the current pistons and using it the way it is?

Thanks.

Ok, good. Go ahead and pull the other head. Look very carefully at the damaged cylinders. That motor has kinda thin sleeves. Look to make sure they arent cracked.

The biggest thing is to determine why it did what it did. Get the pistons out and tell us exactly what they look like.

Good luck!

Re: Pistons bad...Need Advice...

I don't really have that kind of flexibility. The person who is helping me is a mechanic.

What I am trying to get at is:

-He wants $1800.00 (parts & labor) to fix the engine. That would inlcude swapping out the pistons, tuning the engine, etc.

For a 15 year old engine, is this type of re-build worth while. The engine starts like a charm and sounds good when it runs. I replaced one of the heads and the water pump along with the VRO, power pack, etc.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

300.00 per cylinder including pistons and machine work is a fairly good deal. Those pistons list for around 115.00 each. If you figure the gasket set, bearings and other parts along with the machine work, youre at or over 200.00 per cylinder already. I'm sure there would be some sort of warranty also.

You mentioned that one head was replaced already. Make sure the heads are a matching set. Post the numbers on the heads if youre unsure.

Good luck!

You got a deal!!

A buddy had his laptop stolen. You got any used ones? It doesnt have to be a real super computer but it would help if its easily read in sunlight. He uses it for the injected motors and its always used outside. Let me know at dhadley50@aol.com if you like.
