New boater... question on 90hp Evinrude

I recently purchased a 17' boat with a 90hp outboard Evinrude. It was purchased from a co-worker so I didn't check it out too much other than to put it on the water and make sure it ran.

Tonight I removed the cover from the engine and noticed a VERY strong gas smell. I looked inside the cover and the foam (i'm guessing some kind of protective foam) was saturated in gas. I'm wondering if this is normal or if I need to have the engine checked out.

Any help is appreciated... thanks!

no thats not normal!
you need to get that checked before you attempt to start it.
i would also try to clean/air out that hood.
-
that is an explosion waiting to happen- all it would take is one stray spark.

A very common place for a fuel leak is the cap on the primer solenoid. Pressure the fuel line by squeezing the bulb. If the cap is cracked you'll see it pretty easily. Dont attempt to start the engine -- just pressure the line. You'll find it.

Good luck!

Also, be sure to let it dry out well or replace the foam before you run it again. Nothing to fool with! Clean out motor pan as best you can , also.
