'92 90hp v4 timeing

can some one please tell me the proceadure for setting the timeing on this engine without test prop

thanks for the response. heres where im at i found tdc and adjusted the pointer set butterflys and sinced carbs adjusted cam follower pickup now i have pulled plug wires connect timing lite to #1 wire and with throttle wide open have assistant crank eng. and adjust spark advance to 28 btdc next i i put throttle to idle and adjust pick up timeing to 4 btdc <br />however it still runs rough and spits im guessing the next place to go is the carbs any idias are greatly appreciated one question is the spark advance i read that when timing this way the addvance should be 24 btdc if so what about pick timeing?<br />thanks in advance for your help

Idle timing is irelevant at this point...It's only a "starting point". <br /> If your max timing is listed as 28 degrees, set at 24 degrees with the method you are using or you will be WAY too far advanced when run WOT on the water.<br />Set your idle timing to 700+/-50, where ever it runs best-(stock reeds).<br />Set idle at around 600-650 if you have Boyesen reeds.. :)

crosvine....Could you give us a little history here? Is the engine new to you or have you had it a while? <br /><br />If its' new to you, did you inherit the problem?<br /><br />If you have had the engine a while, is this a new problem? When was the last time the carbs were overhauled?<br /><br />I just run across your original post. Ya' really need to keep them together.<br /><br />Anyway....did you rebuild the carbs along with the overhaul? Why did you rebuild in the first place?
