Hi all, I have a few winter projects for my boat one of which is adding a water pressure guage. I have a V4 Johnson 110 hp w/VRO, 1988. I've done some searches an come up confused. I'd like to know where is the appropriate place to connect the tubing for the guage on my particular motor (it seems they are all as individual as snowflakes). Also, I know the differences between crossflow and looper but cannot determine from my manual (covers many models) or any searches I've done which induction type my motor is.

As always, thanks, I wish I could help as much as I've been helped.

Calico

CalicoKid,

Simply tee into the hose that goes from the back of the block to the telltale in the lower cowl.

Calico Kid.....You can do a search on this site about crossflow vs. looper and probably find out what year they changed that motor to a looper, I think that 110 was still a crossflow in 1988. Maybe one of the experts on this site can tell you for sure. Good Luck.

Yeah, I tried some searches, read about fifty posts or so and still can't determine what I've got. From what I've read the two types of motor require two different WP guage connections. I suppose I'll go out in the cold and pull a spark plug and try to look inside... sniff :( ;)

Will I get an accurate pressure reading at the telltale hose? I read somewhere that there might not be enough pressure there so close to an outlet. Thanks again, I'll be checking back!

My 87s are crossflows. It will pay you several times over to get the OMC shop manual. Mine paid for itself first time I opened the cover.

The 110 was only available as a crossflow.

Your engine is a cross flow. To hook up the pressure guage, I would hook right up to the tell-tale nipple, and do away with the tell-tale. If you tee into the tell-tale, you are bleeding away pressure, and your guage will read low. You probably can't see the tell-tale from where your sitting, but see your guage at a glance. Another thing, a tell-tale will show an engine pumpimg, but not that it is cooling. I have had engines pumping with a solid stream, but running to hot to touch. A guage will show a pump that is about to go, or loss of water pick-up. Your warning horn will give you an over heat. Just double insurance.

boston2, besides the obvious side of the water having NO WHERE to go, you have no way of just looking back to see that water pump is working.....bottom line? Tee-in, have it done-correctly............. :)

Walleyehed: What do you mean the WATER HAS NO PLACE TO GO? OMC was building these V-4 engines a long time before they ever put a tell-tale stream on one. Where do you think it went then? I was mistaken about removing the tell-tale. If it is tapped into the top of the block, this can aid circulation by breaking a steam, or air pocket such as on the inline 3 cylinder engines. I put a pressure guage on my 1972, 125 HP engine by tapping into the water jacket above #1 cylinder, It has no tell-tale. I have been running this engine over 15 years.

THE WATER HAS NO PLACE TO GO IF YOU PUT A GAUGE ON THE END OF THE HOSE FOR THE TELL-TAIL......is what I meant. Be careful where you "Tap in" or you'll cause either a hot spot, or cold spot.
I just went back and looked at your post, and #1, on a crossflow, NEVER do away with the tell-tale-YOU TEE-IN there. Not quite sure what you are thinking here?????????
As for where I think the water goes, is the same question I was asking about your reply, except I was wondering if you knew where the water COMES FROM.
BTW, My family was with OMC from 1968-1995....I think I have a little knowledge as to "Where the water goes"..........
