temperature diffrence

just replaced water pump and had heads pulled and water jackets scrubbed out on my 91 225 evinrude. The motor did not have thermostats when I got it so I put some in it. It was originally running at 175 degrees at wot. Now runs about 130 or so. When I came back and was flushing it found out the port side head was notably hotter than the starboard side. My sensor was on the starboard side. Was wondering if this is normal for this engine or if there is something else wrong with it?

El....might want to take another look....you should have temp sensors on both heads.

Re: temperature diffrence

Did you replace the rubber seats in each head when you installed new thermostats? If there is a substantial difference in head temp, test again while the boat is in the water to eliminate air and water pressure problems when using a flusher. Use a temp gun or temperature crayons (Thermomelt stix) to find out if the thermostats are within specs at idle.

Re: temperature diffrence

You're right - there's something wrong. There's separate thermostat for each bank, and each should hold that bank at the proper temp (a bit above 130 sounds right, if anyone knows for sure what the thermos on a 1991 225 are supposed to open at, please let us know).

What might the problem be? Could check thermostat itself using your stove, a pot of water & a thermometer. Also, check that the water hose is unblocked. If you can't spot the problem, pull the head on that side & check that the cooling water passages in the head & cylinder are unblocked. Use a new head gasket & torque wrench when re-installing the head.

Re: temperature diffrence

Also would like to know best place to mount my water pressure tee on this motor. btw all the plugs where a light brown and just a bit wet, no carbon on them. motor tends to idle low although I resynchronized it and set timing at 6 degrees ATDC. Is this the best setting for it? Just following the manual.

My 95 200 will not idle in gear using the manual's idle timming spec of 0-4 degrees ATDC.
It idles ok at 2 degrees BTDC.

Advance it a couple of degrees even if it is out of spec for your engine.

But, NEVER advance your wide open timing farthur than what the manual says.

Mucka can you explain more about that exhaust side thing?

Re: temperature diffrence

if this is a 1991, you probably have the water control valve.
on the starboard side down on the adapter plate there is a black elbow with a hose going to the bottom of water control valve at throttle arm.
that is the line you want to tee into- its the incoming water supply.
-

Re: temperature diffrence

Thank you all for your advice. Any other reasons why one head is hotter than the other? Also my engine only has 1 temp sender, should it have one per head? If so how is it wired in? I have no clue.

Re: temperature diffrence

on the port head you should have 1 temp switch just to the lower rite of tstat cover with 2 leads.
starboard head it should be in same location but with 1 lead.
-
how is the temp in the water?
on muffs is not a good way to tell, alot of air is gets trapped in the water cavity.
i wouldnt run it too long that way without a flushing muffler.

Re: temperature diffrence

In the water it ran at about 160-165 degrees with the sender on the starboard head. The one getting hot on the flushing adapter is the port head. Should I have a temp sender for my gauge in each head?

Re: temperature diffrence

why not just move it to the other head to sea what the temp is?
it wouldnt hurt to have both for trouble shooting the cooling system.
as soon as i can im going to get another gauge, so i have one for each head.

Re: temperature diffrence

thats a good idea I will probably do the same. You think it might be possible to run both off one head? You think the higher temp head will cancel out the lower temp sending unit

i had thought about a switch, but dont know if that would work.
dont think combining them would work.
