I have a 76 9.9 Evinrude that is driving me bonkers! It runs fine in the tank but waits to get on the river to act up.I have replaced the following. Both coils, both sets of points and condensors, the fuel pump and had the engine rebuilt.I am using the recommended oil.
The engine will run fine for a short time and then begin running intermitantly on one cylinder.
I have heard from my local mechanics that the 1976 especially , along with the 74 and 75 were "Sorry" engines from the factory and inherently have this problem.
Help is desperately needed with this problem.
Any input will be greatly Appreciated.
thanks, Albert

I had a 74 9.9 on my duck boat that experienced the same problem. The root cause was the driver coil a $18.00 part solved the problem. I did replace both coils points and condensor. Ounce these items were replaced the motor was very reliable which is important when your 2.5 miles off shore in Saginaw Bay with 3 foot roolers in November. Driver coils were week in 74-76 a service bulletin was issued. good luck

Check, and see if you have a good ground contact on both coils. Check, and see how much play you have in the mag. plate by lifting up and down on both sides. There was and update kit on these mags that removed eccess play with a better bearing ring, and retainer as I recall. When you pull the flywheel, see if the wheel has been striking the drive coil. Even though you replaced the condensers, you could have a bad one. Try to isolate the problem, and see if it is always the same cylinder acting up. Check all plug in connectors with an ohm meter. Let us know what you find.

I replaced the recommended Champion 835 UL81C plugs with the NGK 5110 plugs which were cross referenced.
I took the motor to the river yesterday and it ran fine.I went about 6 miles and it cranked 1st pull everytime.I am keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that the old champions had just been "fouled" to many times.
thanks for the advice, Albert
