Purchased a pre-owned Ranger with a 1993 Evinrude 150 V6 Intruder. Motor runs perfectly at 1000 RPM or higher, at about 900RPM or below motor coughs/wheezes, then dies. VRO removed so mix oil manualy. Have taken to local OMC authorized repair shop. Shop put new carb kits on all six carbs, new plugs and minor tune up, fuel lines inspected for leaks. Motor continues to behave same way. How do I fix this?

Ubi....I'm sure they did, but you never know, so I would call that shop and ask if they did a link and synch on those carbs after putting them back on and also ask if the idle speed and mixture was set properly. If this is the problem you took it to them for, take it back. You payed to have it fixed and it isn't, they need to find out why. Good Luck.

MMCPECK - you are correct ;) , they did do a link & sync. Took boat to launch ramp today with repair shop mechanic. He said engine is leaning-out when using low rpm carb jets. Thinks problem is with dirt in fuel line, tank or in motor. If that is the case, what is proper fix? What makes me mad  is that I have paid over $800 in repair work to date and still have problem.

Well Ubi I'd be pretty frustrated too. But sometimes motors drive you crazy with these idling problems. If it were me I would richen up the idle mixture a little and see what happens. If he thinks there is dirt in the tank or line somewhere, put an inline filter in. Do you have a fuel/water separater installed? If none of this works your gonna have to start getting on this guy about the fact that 800 bucks hasn't gotten you anywhere, and see what he is willing to do for you, after all you wanted it fixed not just a bunch of parts replaced, and have the same problem. Maybe one of the experts on this site can help a little more. Let us know. Good Luck.

You do not have adjustable idle screws on that motor, you have to replace the air bleed jets to change calibration. Using the engine model number, the parts book should be consulted to make sure the correct jets are installed in the right holes.

The recirculation valves, hoses, and fittings should be checked for leakage and if the intake manifold gaskets are black colored, replace them for the better brown style that won't distort and cause air leaks.

If someone overtorques the side covers on the carbs, they can suck air and cause a lean condition with spitting and sneezing. Installing large washers under the screw heads along with a new gasket can help. Use a cleaner spray with the plastic tip in the jets and see if any leaks around the side cover.

Running one or two cans of Engine Tuner decarbonizing the motor if it has slightly stuck rings can help the idle in some cases.

Thank you Seahorse & MMCPECK: Problem was solved. Carbs were re-inspected and found additional particles floating inside. Have purchased a fuel filter/water separator & will install this weekend in fuel line before motor. Added engine cleaner & fuel preservative to both tanks. Took boat out for test run and FINALLY :D ran perfectly at idle and strong at WOT(62mph). Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
