Water pump trouble

I have a 1998 30hp Johnson motor.
I took the lower unit off the other day and took apart the water pump to make sure everything looked okay. When I put everything back together and started the motor the propeller started to turn, there was also a rubbing sound. How can I correct this problem? Do I need a new impeller? Also no water was comming out of the pee hole or whatever it is called, is there any chance that I hurt my motor?

Thanks, Nick

Nick, How long did you run the motor. If no water was coming out of the pee hole you probably need a new water pump. Also if you think the engine got hot check the head gaskets.
Also check the water intake on the lower unit to see if it is plugged up. Let me know what you find. Good Luck

JTMaclain,

Usually if you are going to go to all that work to remove the L/U it's a good idea to replace the impeller.

Several things could have happened.

1. The impeller is not turning because the shaft key did not get replaced.

2. The water tube is not connected.

3. The gear shift linkage is bound up.

4. The impeller was put in the opposite way that it turned before.

If you are doing this for the first time without a manual, you are kidding yourself. Spend $30.00 and get one. That's a lot cheaper than a $1,500.00 engine.

Look here:

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/manuals/

Re: Water pump trouble

jt, the water tube is not connected up to the powerhead. The noise is the water tube rubbing on the rotating driveshaft. nevjb

Re: Water pump trouble

The prop turned because the driveshaft has to engage the lower end of the crankshaft when you replace the lower unit. As nevjb suggested, you probably didn't get the water tube into the gromment on the pump when you pushed the lower unit into place and bolted it home.

Was the water pump working when you bought the motor?

Re: Water pump trouble

Hallo JtMaclain,

the prop rotated because the shift rod isn't adjusted correctly.
The noise comes from friction through the clutch dog pressing (not coupling) against the forward or reverse gear wheel.

With the gear lever in neutral the clutch dog for the upper and the lower shift rod (in the window, where the water gets in) must be positioned equally at the end of the two rods.

Your second problem is a wrongly mounted waterpump.

Nordy
