Hello fellow Johnny owners!

I have a 1984 70hp Johnson that has been rebuilt in the spring of 2002. Great engine...

This year in '03, I had to replace the spark plugs (LCCJC4's), and a new fuel filter.

Shortly after I replaced the plugs and the filter, the engine started to act up. Meaning: my electric choke in the ignition wasn't working.

I bought a new primer hose with bulb included. I put it on the right way and quadruple(sp???) checked, and whenever I pumped fuel into the engine, the bulb WOULD NOT get firm.

So I was stunned because I didn't know how to start my engine. Here is how I start my engine...

1.) I pump the primer bulb about 3 times to get fuel into the engine.

2.) I would uncover the cowel and flick the little red switch. After that, it Realeases pressure from it  then put the switch back.

3.) I would start the engine and it would sputter and shut down :(

4.) I repeated steps 2 & 3, then it would start and keep running

Please Note: When I would shut it down for about 1 hour or so, I would have to repeat the process over again.

My question for you is, is what can I do in order to repair it, and also I think I am going take it in for service in the spring if it is not easy to repair.

JAZZ ;)

JAZZedBW,

As you probably know, your engine doesn't have a choke. It has a primer system (red lever).

Typically, if the fuel hose primer bulb will not firm up, it is caused by leaking needle and seat valve(s)in one or more of the carburetors. Rebuilding the carbs is not that hard, with a manual.

Also, the red lever should be pointing down toward the body of the solonoid. Use this starting procedure.

1. Prime fuel hose.

2. Turn key to on (not start) position.

3. Push the key in and count to eight.

4. Release key and start engine.

DJohns,

I understand your reasoning and thank you for your suggestions. However, when I push in the ignition, it should be a very loud "CLICK" sound. It doesn't do that which leads me to think that the Choke is froze up. Its on the fritz.

JAZZ ;)
