Hello - I have a 89 Evinrude 200hp on a 20ft Grady White. The engine only has about 300 hours, Dealer serviced etc. This week while at the dealer being winterized, he noticed a "pecking" sound while running with the hood off. He said that he could move the fly wheel and said that the main bearings are worn. His suggestion would be to keep on running it at this point, saying it may keep on going for 5 more years. I use the boat offshore only about 20 hours a year and most of that is at trolling speed. Should I consider opening up the engine during the winter slow time and rebuild it, replace with a new one or just keep on going. He sells new engines and he is by no means trying to push a new motor on me. If I keep on going, will this thing just lock up one day? Thanks in advance.

If you suspect the upper main -- pop it out and look at it. You dont have to take the motor apart. Remove the flywheel, stator, and timer base. The upper main is held in with 8 bolts.

Im suprised the dealer didnt want to do it if he thought it was bad or loose in the housing.

Good luck!

There is slight back and forth and up and down movement when the motor is cold and the bearings are still in good shape. It all depends on how much movement. Your can replace the upper main brg and hsg. and use a micrometer on the crankshaft if you wish. Perhaps an inspection by another tech would be in order.
