I have a 62' 40 HP Seahorse that I purchased with a 15' MFG. The engine runs good with the exception that you have to hold the throttle a little past start to keep it idling and the ajustment screw (plastic) is all the way down. I want to service and maintenance this motor myself. I have done a lot of reading of past posts and greatly appreciate this board. I have also purchased a manual (Clymer not very good hope to get a Seloc soon). I purchased a compression tester today and checked the compression and it was 110 psi exactly in both #1 and #2 (I was elated!) I changed and gapped the plugs and changed the gearcase lube (looked good). I also bought a tune up kit and a carb kit but Clymer manual seems greek to me, hopefully easier than it looks. Is Seloc that much better? I am an A/C tech so I will learn. The only thing I know about this motor is that nothing has been done to it for 2 years and before that belonged to a man in Pa. in his 70's. What next? I plan on decarbing soon, do I do that before or after rebuilding the carb? I just want to know when I put my boat (restored completely) on the water I can have some confidence as much as possible. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

moganhunter <br /><br />I would do the tune-up and carb job before decarbing and see how she runs then. Seloc manual is a bit more detailed for the novice to understand. Make sure you change out the water pump impeller before you run it anymore, as after it sat for 2 years, it's probably brittle and could fail. That would not be good! Just good practice to replace it when it's condition is unknown. Other than that, I believe a tune-up and carb job will get you going fine and cure your idle problem.

Just to add to what rickdb1boat said. <br />The Seloc manual is pretty good for that vintage. I pick it up more often then my OEM manual. Both of them have errors and gaps, but together they cover almost everything. I expect you'll find yourself in the same boat with a Clymers and a Seloc.<br />One other thing you might want to look into is the synchronization between the throttle buterfly valve opening and the ignition timing. Seloc covers it on page 5-30, paragraph 14, 15, and 17. Ignore 16 and 18.<br />This is one spot where the manual is vague. The "pointer" mentioned in paragraph 14 is the thing pointing sharp end up, just to the left of the cam roller. It is part of the manifold itself.<br />Aligned is when the line on the cam points directly to the center of the manifold pointer.<br />The OEM manual calls it the "Manifold Projection", which I think describes it more accurately.<br /><br />PS - Are you adjusting the idle stop on the remote controls? If so, there's one on the engine itself, or you could take up some of the throttle line's slack at the (adjustable) trunion where the throttle cable attaches to the engine.<br /><br />Good luck!

Hello.<br />Welcome to the club.<br />The difference between the Clymer and the Seloc is that Clymer expects you to be an outboard mechanic and Seloc expects you to be to be a beginner and gives you a thousand helpful hints.<br />Before you do a complete tune up and carburator job, you should just check out in your seloc or clymer how to adjust the needle valves and set them properly. It is a good idea to disconnect the accellerator cable from the engine and use the manual one on the engine and then see where you stand with the idle position. If you run that engine in salt water you will have to run it in a barrel filled with fresh water every time you take it out of the water. There are five or six grease nipples where you should give a shot of good graphite grease every thirty hours. And hose that thing off after being in salt water.<br />Good luck.

Rolmops and Morgan, Tempo flusher part number 380020 (for OMC/Montgomery-Wards) should fit that engine. Iboats sells em here.<br />"Muffs" type flushers do not work on this engine as Rolmops pointed out.

Hey dude, I'm just down the pike from you in Palm Bay. I have several Clymer and Seloc manuals and understand your situation. If you need a better manual find an out of print early ABOS manual. They have a volume "for motors over 30hp" and you will need the one published after 1973. The early ABOS manuals are MUCH better than any Clymer or Seloc manual. They are found daily on ebay for under $10.
