I have four Evinrudes to choose from at the outboard repair shop. Which is going to be the most reliable and the best value.

1. Late 60s Evinrude 18hp Manual Start ($595)
-this engine has been used VERY little, it looks practically brand new under the cowl

2. Late 60s Evinrude 18hp Electric Start ($695)

3. 1975 Evinrude 25hp Manual Start ($650)

4. 1977 Evinrude 25hp Manual Start ($695)

All of these motors have been gone through thouroughly and tuned up/repaired. The motor will be used for duck hunting so it MUST be reliable.

Hi UNCC Grad

Unfortunately I have no experience with the 60ties models. I would pick the 77 if its a 20, 25 or 35 HP, anytime. From 76 and on they had the CDI ignition, which is far more efficient and requires less maintenance. From 75 they got larger displacement and these crossflows are really good motors. Just change waterpump and impeller now and then, and sparkplugs and gearoil.

The more recent the better! Unless its in really poor shape.

I'm leaning towards #1 since I may likely try and sell the boat in the next two years. That is unless someone can talk me out of it.

My main concern as that the motor be reliable and this is the cleanest motor in the bunch.

Late 60's...that's not a selling feature! $100 more gets you more hp and 10 years younger. I dunno...

is any of those really big enough? johnson 40 wouldnt put my 1654 up on plane, would barely push it through heavy chop. i am currently running a 60 johnson, that puts the hull up easily and has enough oomph to shove it through wake on rough water. i would certainly go newer if possible.
