Let me put it like this. The Impellor is made of rubber. Car tires are made of rubber. Would you depend on tires that were 20 years old.

Humm 20 years…. I am not a mechanic but I recommend that you change it 20 times this winter to catch back up.

Seriously that pump is due to fly apart and get all the little bits stuck throughout your cooling system. If that thing has been running in saltwater you’re going to be in for a fight to get those bolts out.

How on earth did you get 15 years out of a water pump?

Mac

Pick some Lotto numbers for me. Then go change your water pump. You are a lucky dude and seriously overdue for an impeller.

You will never know before it is to late ,it will probably stop working at the worst time possible .
or is it slow deteriation
IF you are lucky :)

15++ years ,how about the rest of the pump ?
Change it all .

All right, all right,I'll take that as a definite 'fix it now'The engine only get's about 15 hours use and always in fresh water, might explain the luck. Thanks for quick reply.

Re: impeller,change or not?

I have a 28 Johnson that I didn't change for about 7 years. Then the warning horn started giving me beeps at high speed, but would quit when I slowed down. Figured it was time for a change. Looked good, but it had taken too much "Set" to pump enough. Still runs great! I now take better care of things before disaster hits. :)

Don't ruin a good piece of equipment trying to save a dime.......complete water pump kit, because I don't believe parts of the rotating mass are available anymore.

Hello
I will tell you like I tell my customers. most people that "Need" a water pump, need pistons as well. pistons and the associated cost are very expensive. the price of the pump remains the same. your choice
good luck and keep posting

Re: impeller,change or not?

That's true. Most big problems begin with a small one, that could have been avoided with a little inexpensive maintenence. I think nowdays we are much more aware of what needs to be done to avoid a costly repair, than we were in the past. I think alot of it had to do with that, "If it works, leave it alone", thinking. As I've gotton a little older and hopefully, wiser, I do what I need to, to avoid spending the big bucks unnecessarily. Water pumps now are just another part of maintenence and not considered a "Major" repair. Everyone should at least try to change their own if they can. That will go along way in the future toward longevity of the motor, as will the other simple things that keep you cruising carefree on the water...

Re: impeller,change or not?

Rick, you expressed it very well. This engine was bought by my father new and we definitely have been the drain the bottom end,put in new oil,run the carb dry and store it for the winter type's.Since I have been tinkering with it I have been slightly afraid of openning the lower unit and screwing up an 'old guy' that's running fine.Am now armed with a Seloc manual and prepped for changing the pump,I agree it shouldn't be that difficult.I get a hell of a kick from still using what was the big boat in our family. The engine has always pushed the same 15ft wooden Peterborough, although the boat has shrunk a ft,woodrot.

I always use this rule of thumb "when in doubt, change it out" Charlie

You are right, but I wouldn't be in doubt if it was 15 years old, I would be in a state of panic! I don't know how he got 15 years out of that little piece of rubber.

Very lucky...
