Re: My plastic garage collapsed on the boat

What I have seen up here, someone took plastic roof panels (could be thin metal) and used U-bolts to secure them to the roof of his. Not sure if they swept the snow off or not during the winter. We didn't get any bit snowfalls in town this year. It was still standing this spring though.
I had one of those over my boat also. While I was gone for a few weeks, we had some high winds and rain. I came back to find it collapsed and a 4' X 4' X 12'' thick block of ice in my boat. Grrrr.

AK Chappy

Merc90, I seen a nice one yesterday that looked like it would hold up well to the snow. There was nobody around to ask but if I go by some evening I'll stop and inquire for you.

Merc90 : Do a Google search for King Canopy. They may have something that you can use.

Merc90: I have the one you showed...I got it for $179 at BJ's...they have one for $299 that is from the same company but rated for snow loads. I get to push the snow off everytime it snows... :(

in this picture you can see the left side is weighted down with water/ice that I hadn't cleared yet..

http://home.comcast.net/~justmrwill/boat/72SL_profile.JPG

-JustMrWill

Re: My plastic garage collapsed on the boat

Newbie, I just got through my first winter with a Shelter King brand peaked roof model. Bought online it cost about $520 delivered. Came with front and back roll up doors and all necessary hardware and anchors. The anchors you show in the link are called duckbill and can be purchased at landscape supply. They are used to stake new trees. I got a 12x20 even though my trailer is 22'. Just cut a slit in centerof front door and installed some grommets. When door is pulled over tongue of trailer I lace it up and it works just fine and it saved$250 from going to the next larger size. I looked at Sam's and feel the SK's tubing is almost twice as beefy. If you are near Troy let me know and you are welcome to come look at it. If not, best of luck in whatever you choose. I know I worried long and hard before deciding.

When you start talking $500-800, you may just as well put up a small carport. Pole barn construction with 4x6 treated, 12' trusses, shingled roof. You could then tarp the sides if you like. This would hold up to any snow load, wind or rain. Much better protection, not too hard either.

Paid $159.95 for this one at Costco in November. It has 2" powder painted posts and all stainless hardware. Although I did not use them, it came with full sides and ends. I anchored the post feet with lead shields and stainless lag bolts.

We did have one snow here. I just used a pushbroom pushed up from underneath to shake the snow off.

Heck, I thought I had a picture of it. I will take one tommorrow and post it.

When I lived in New Jersey I bought an instant garage that cost me over $2,000 for my 24 FT Baja. It was very heavy duty using 2" diameter galvanized tubing. I also added cross bracing making it even more stronger. I just can't remember the manufacturer. I believe they still advertise in Popular Mechanics. It definitely was not affected by any snow loads. My boat stayed out of the elements.

I am not far from you. Where did you order from? Did you get the 8 foot high one and did you have any trouble with interference from the low roof?

Thanks

I store mine in a warehouse along with a lot of other gear for $55 per month. Of course I have to drive a mile to look at it.

way back in the dark ages the military built quonset huts. they were strong and simple to build. there are some huge ones still standing on the old bases. an arc is much stronger

Re: My plastic garage collapsed on the boat

That's why I wanted the roundtop ShelterKing. The model name of it is "Quonset"! :)

PS I went to Tractor Supply, they only had a mini display model. They carry the Shelter Logic brand.

Has ANYONE seen or heard about a Jewett Cameron Canopy? They seem to be a real small player in the field.
