Is it true that it is bad karma to rename a boat. Have just brought my first, a runabout originally called 'The Other Woman'. Feel a bit of a dork towing it around and would like to rename it after my 2 children, but have been told 'nooooooooo, not a good thing to do'. Any comments?

Yes, bad.

Three ways to appease the marine gods and avoid bad luck when changing a boat name:

1. Change to xxxxx2. Although "The Other Woman 2" don't sound right.

2. Use a word from the original name in the new name - you can use 'other' and 'woman', not 'the'.

3. Recite a chant and perform a ritual to appease the gods - there is a specific way to do this - I'll dig it up and repost.

John, this post is mostly in jest - but would you take the chance, I didn't. ;)

Aldo

John, it's only bad luck if you rename a boat you named yourself. If you rename a boat you bought and you're the new owner it's your responsibility to rename it. :D

No bad luck that way!

Good luck with the boat!

Re: Boat name again

O/K John, this is a C&P of what I used, I couldn't find a virgin so we spilt expensive white wine - and then drank expensive white wine! Good luck.

First: You must DE-name: Example; Bless the former name and allow that
name to go to the everlasting sea. ( A simple thanks for it's former
service and a good-bye to " Old name here" should do.) Also remove all
traces of the orginal name.
Second: You must establish the new name - Now here comes the fun part!!

1ST method ----You must pour very good wine (RED wine- see below ) on
the bow and offer some to the god Poseidon pouring the wine
into the waters of the Home Port, then say outloud the new name, asking
Poseidon to bless the boat and all who ride within. If it is a sailboat,
don't forget Aeolus, the god of winds. Both gods blessings required.
Also, the Captain(owner), crew and guests should sip the wine as well
(spill and intake quantity is not limited! The gods like generosity ! )

2nd method ---- After de-naming : Scuttle the boat out of sight of land
-refloat and rename - not many of us can do that
one! (at least not on purpose)

3rd method ---- The one I like! -- Have a Virgin urinate on the bow
while renaming the boat and asking Poseidon's blessing -- The major
problem here is ahhhhhh -- Well I'll let you work on that one.

I used method 1 and 3 ( a friend has a baby girl). By the way, all the
methods have REAL historical backgrounds, Such as:

Red wine is the wine to spill , it symbolizes the blood of a virgin (yep,
they used to sacrifice a virgin and spill the blood on the boat). White
champagne is a "new" invention. When christening a new ship, I would break champagne but also spill some red wine.

If you are interested, I have an Ode to the sea and wind gods, I wrote
to be read during re-nameing:

I bid Hail!! Aoelus and Poseidon! and seek your benefaction upon this
vessel,
May the name she carried before, be gone as the winds of yore, having
served the former master with honor.
I, now, with deep respect, petition you royal beings, to give this
vessel's new hailing and her next voyages, your kindnesses.
Be it known to one and all! This vessel from this day will be hailed
as"...New Name...".

--------------------------------

John . I never really heard about the bad luck thing but maybe you should just get a minister or priest to bless it with a holy water like "JACK DANIELS' and go from there... LOL

Hey Aldo,

Hope they only sacrificed virgins over the age of 70 with a living grandparent. Do the Gods care about gender?

I don't drink alcohol anymore John, I don't drink any less, but I don't drink any more either. :p

The renaming thing was a bit of fun for the family and a reason for a party. If it wards off bad luck then thats a bonus. Thats how I see it anyway.

Aldo

Bad luck or not, there's no way I'd leave that name on my boat. ;)

Just change it, Bad things happen anyway. There is no conclusive evidence it will be bad. Besides its your boat now. This is 2005, not 1925.

Re: Boat name again

I really tried to refrain from saying anything on this topic because I know sailors are a superstitious lot. I personally would change the rename the boat and not think twice about it. Worrying about good/bad luck is a waste of energy. And bad luck happens to people who look for it. If you are at all concerned, then think of it as a "new to you" boat that needs a name. No worries, mate.

Re: Boat name again

I hope some day I could be just like Dunaruna

Although I have not put the letters on it, I named mine after one of my late Mom's jokes. Here is the story. After her open heart surgery, I ran up to go see her. She was pretty out of it and starting to wake. It was myself, my Sister, and an attending female nurse in the room. I walked over and took my Mom's hand in mine and leaned down so she could see who it was. "I'm here Mom", I said in an assuring way "It's Me". She struggled to make her voice come out and the oxygen mask was no help. She muttered some thing but no one understood. "It's me Mom" I said again "I'm here for you". Again she muttered through the mask, it was still unitelligable. Then the nurse, reach over and removed the mask just enough, assuring us it would be alright. My Mom looked right in my eyes and still with a struggle but now clearly enough to understand she answered me, "Big Deal". I was a bit stunned as my Sister and the nurse fell out. Then I broke in laughter once again appreciating my Mom's unpredictable sense of humor. Hence my boat's name "The Big Deal" in her memory.

Re: Boat name again

Just went through the Re-Naming ceremony a couple of weeks ago. We were not sure if the boat had a name or not, because there was a name on the trailer. So we went through the De-Naming to the Gods and then we Re-Named her after my Mom. It was not only fun to do but it meant allot not only to me but our Teen age kids.
