My 91 evinrude 225 is terrible to start when cold. Today I had primed it pushed the key in and turned the engine over and no start for several minutes. Then I shot a little dab of engine starter into the intake and it fired immediately and ran great all day. Any suggestion what may be doing this. btw compression is even across all six cylinders at 85 psi. Was told this was not too far off for the v-6 looper.

Either you are not holding the primer in long enough or it is not working properly. You might ought to check to see if you have a healthy spark. Have you changed the plugs recently?

they have about 40 hrs on them, the spark jumps a 7/16 gap. Will check the primer. How long should I prime for?

Re: Hard starting 225

Does the spark jump the 7/16" gap when the plugs are installed or removed? If the starting system is strong enough and the ignition system operational, you should have that spark when the plugs are installed.

For cold starting, hold the primer bulb arrow up and squeeze until hard. Make sure motor is vertical, don't touch the throttle, turn key to ON and press in for 5 seconds. Continue holding it in while turning to START, as soon as motor fires up, you may have to hold the key in for a second or two longer, or "tickle" it to keep it running until it gets some "warmth".

they are the QL77jc4. When I bought it it had QL78YC plugs and it seemed to start and run better. Any reason why they did this? The guy that owned it prior was a knowledgeable mechanic.

I'm pretty sure the QL78YC is the proper plug for that motor and I would probably put that plug back in. Good Luck.

The QL 78YC is for '94 and later 200-225 motors.

The manual calls for the QL77JC4 When I got it the thermostats had been removed. I think that is why he had the hotter plug in there. Anyway put new plugs in and it starts right away thanks to all for your help.

I hope you put tstats in. Your motor will never get to the proper operating temp without them.

Yeah I put them back in some time ago now it runs at a constant 140-155 and the water pressure is up as well.
