Yesterday I took the family fishing, I was almost full throttle and suddenly there was a bang in the lower part of the outboard and the engine screamed as the prop stopped moving. The engine would not run properly afterwards, we got home on the auxilliary!
Does anyone have any sugestions as to the cause?
Many thanks

Without investigating further, I would suspect a broken driveshaft.

I say pinion gear because you said the engine also did'nt run right. I broken pinion, and the resultant friction could cause this. A spun prop hub would'nt make a bang, and stop cold.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for that, i may have over stated the scenario, have just got back from taking the boat out again to test, it appears the engine is going fine but there is loss of pulling power, something is wrong with power to the prop, could the prop have sheared?
