My manual says that the upper seal should be coated with Gasket sealing compound when assembling the cylinder block and crank, yet on the very next page it says to spread a thin bead of gasket sealer on both flange faces but to keep it at least 1/4 inch away from seals. This is contradictory. Do you need to place gasket sealant on the seals or not?

They want you to seal both halves of the 'block' (power head) with Loctite 518 (or equivalent)and keep it 1/4" away from internal oil passages ect. The upper seal can be later installed with gasket sealing compound, which is different from the Loctite 518....

hello
I always seal the outer portion of the sealwith Gel -seal. the reason your manual says different is to many people think if a 1/8th bead is good a 1/4 will be better. when torqued down the sealant oozes out everywhere. that is why they say stay 1/4" away from oil passages, seals and what not. this is another area where the book was written by an engineer that has no experience and edidted by a non technician and published. if ya really want to have fun try some of the jap or swedish manuals that had the same then translated by a translator to english.we call it swinglish and jinglish.so the easiest thing I can tell you is to wipe a thin bead of gel-seal around the seal, install it fully seated and assemble the block.
good luck and keep posting. and always remember that common sense is the best tool in the box

I like to use red loctite (for nuts and bolts) for seals. Just enough to barely coat the surface. Excess would get into the bearings and fail them if you overdo it.

Hi BRC
There are several types of seals. Your manual is correct. The seals your book is tring to caution you about are the labryth seals.
this is the type seal used to separate the cylinders on the crank shaft. They are built into the block and are not servicable. They are the bronze looking thing in the crank case halves. If they were to become pluged with sealant they wouldn't work. I hope this clears up your confusion.
