hi guys. I ain't much of a machanic but i can handle things well. I have a 1999 Johnson 5 hp. I left it in the shed for about half a year or more and when i started it (2-3 pulls) no water was coming out. The engine was also heating up. I believe no damage was done to it because i am smart enough to kill the engine if there is no water pumping =P. I bought a new water pump impeller, but i just dont know how to get at the pump. The water pump impeller is just a little plastic thing right? (a little plastic thing can stop an engine running...how pathetic). Anyway i figured it was in the lower unit and so i detached it but not fully yet. I am scared i might damage someting or not be able to put it back together again. I yanked the lower unit but it appears to not be able to come out anymore after about 1 1/2 inch of space. As i said i am afraid to yank it more. Is it supposed to be the maximum it can go or do i just have to put more muscle power into it? I also see that u can buy manuals online. um... :( i dont want to buy one because it costs money, shipping, time and stuff liek that plus i dont know how to buy online so im a lil afraid. Can someone just give me a brief explanation to how to change the impeller? I will try my best to understand :D . Or.... even better yet, is there a possibility of an online manual?

Chris,
You won't find 'online' manuals, that info is copyrighted.
If you plan on keeping the motor, a manual is a must have item. Just for grins, where did you buy the pump impeller??

I haven’t worked on this particular engine but it sounds like you have not disconnected the shift linkage. This is a very common mistake. Use the search tool on this forum for more info.
Mac

When you get the lower unit off, follow the drive shaft from top to bottom. The impeller housing will be the first thing you run into, I will guess it has 4-5 screws holding it in place. Have you checked if the engine has a thermostat, it may be stuck. I would still replace the impeller, because its over 3yrs old. When you buy the parts I would also purchase a manual "pays for itself in the long run".

You have to remove the lower unit to get at the water pump and its rubber impeller. Once you have removed all of the bolts holding the lower unit on and you have disconnected the shift shaft (which is why you need a manual because every one of these suckers has a different number and location of bolts, and a lot of different ways of connecting the shift shaft) you will see that the water pump is a circular housing on the top of the lower unit that the drive shaft runs through. There are usually about 4 bolts or nuts holding the casing to the lower unit. It is removed by sliding it up over the drive shaft after removing the nuts/bolts. The rubber water pump impeller also slips over the drive shaft and is connected to the drive shaft with a key or pin. Make sure the impeller is installed with the rubber vanes pointing in the correct direction. Do this by rotating the drive shaft in the direction of rotation as you lower the pump housing onto the impeller. A little bit of grease on the rubber is a good idea. Bite the bullet and order a manual. I am willing to bet they are available even in Hong Kong.
