Ok i think i found my fast idle problem. while watching engine idle it started to rise in rpm so i choked out the engine i seen a little bubble come from a hair line crack on the upper part rear of the block. From my inspection it looks like that section is possible the intake part of the power head.My question is can i j.b. weld the crack or is the engine trashed.any help will be greatfully appreciated.
Josh

Yesss.
You can try the JB Weld first but it may not work like you want it to in a crack. You may have to tear the engine down and have the crack welded but I'd bet it's fixable.

c/6
Hooty

Because I can't see what you have it's hard to say. Quite often cracks can be welded for a permanent repair. I have used JB weld before for some minor repairs. How ever I am not a real big fan of this stuff and would only use it as a temporary patch. A proper trpair is the way to go.

Re: crack on the block

You may think I'm nuts but, I had a small crack in the block of an old 10 horse Johnson. The motor wasn't worth the price of repair so I carefully drilled out both ends of the crack (to stop it from running) and filled the crack with PC7. I gave the engine to a friend who put it on his 12' duck boat and told him to run it until it blew. That was 4 years ago and it's still going!.
Stalker

I don't have any trouble believing that at all. I'm not sure where this crack is but I'd bet, if it's done right, it could be fixed with JB Weld.

c/6
Hooty

Marine Tex Gray is also pretty good on cracks.

JB is good stuff. Fixes lower units to. Guy brought his 9.9 in one day, and ask me to pressure check the lower unit. Seems he got water in there and left it set over winter and it froze. Pushed out a crack near the skeg. So he wanged it back in with a hammer and applied JB inside and out (did a nice job to) put it back together. Far as I know he's still using it.

Re: crack on the block

No matter how you repair the block, Make sure you drill a small (1/8" ?) hole at each end of the crack. This will transfer the stresses to a larger area and keep the crack from spreading.

Good luck,
Duck L.
