MY 91 70 HP JOHNSON ENGINE IS LOCKED IN THE DOWN POSITION AND THE MOTOR FOR THE TRIM AND TILT IS NOT RESPONDING. I KNOW THE MOTOR IS GETTING 12.66 VOLTS TO THE 2 WIRE CONNECTOR GOING TO THE MOTOR SO THE MOTOR IS MOST LIKELY SHOT. MY PROBLEM IS THAT THE MANUAL RELEASE VALVE SCREW HAS BROKE OFF AND I CANNOT GET THE ENGINE UP TO WORK ON IT, IT IS LOCKED DOWN !! ANY SUGGESTIONS ?

Welcome aboard the board!

An interesting situation. One possible solution would be to remove the motor and as its hanging from the hoist or laid on the floor, remove the stern brackets. Then you can remove the upper tilt pin and remove the unit for service.

Good luck!

Use a torch to heat the release....and vicegrips......no, don't do that...you may melt a valve seat or something.......seriously don't..............this is incase that went through your mind :D

Hi, DLG.

Please lose the capitals. It is considered shouting on the net.

At the risk of destroying your unit you can try to drill out the release screw and move it with an easy out.

I prefer DHadley's suggestion.

Also, if your t/t motor is shot, when you get the new one, and if it is made of steel, put another coat of paint on it or 2..... also, think of getting some anodes to reduce corrossion......also, if you get some thick wire, and electrical tape the motor wires to it, it's easier to run it through the chinese finger grip thing.....

Re: 91 70 JOHNSON

Tried that on my 91' 70 HP rude after mine broke off also. Didn't work. Wound up taking it to the dealer and they removed the motor as Dhadley suggested. I don't know exactly how they got it out, but they did. I was sure I'd mess it up worse than it already was. When they are stuck, it's really tough to get them out. Hope yours comes out easier. If you do get it loose and decide to replace it, don't forget to remove the retaining clip around the screw before you try to back it out.

Yeah, I felt that those T&T's were nothing to fool with, unless you've been there before. Hence my trip to the dealer. Cost me about $200.00 to fix mine, but worth every penny. Might have been a bit high, but so are T&T units!
