I am rebuilding my engine and just got the crank and the pistons back in and have torqued the piston arm caps back in place but I beleive I have over torqued one. Spec is for 5 to 7 ft-lbs and one of them may be around 10. I am afraid to back it off to re-torque because it is a allen wrench head which is acting like it wants to strip. If by trying to back it off it does strip I am done. Is this not a big deal. I need to know before I go ahead and seal up the case.

Hey BRC....if the allen head feels like it wants to strip, cut the allen head wrench down a little and make it fit better.

If the threads feel like the want to strip, then it's already done. Pull the fastener and take a look. Don't take a chance on feel. Know the condition. May save the rebuild.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Outboard Jim

Its not the allen head that wants to strip or the threads. Its the female insides of where the allen head turns against. Do you think the 3 to 4 ponds of over torque is a concern?

I'm not Outboard Jim, but if I were you I would remove the screw with the aid of a vice-grip wrench around the outside of cap screw. This will help the allen bite and the relief.
Those are the single most important fasteners on the outboard. 10 ft-lbs is asking for disaster. In fact, I strongly advise you torque them with an inch-lb rating torque wrench for precision. Also, when you do get the fastener out, you should replace it with a new one. If it's already streched it's ruined.
Little engines are just like big engines, just smaller. Specs are every bit as critical.

Good luck!

They are cheap enough to buy new. Go to a local dealer and get 4 rod cap bolts. If you do not have the precise fit and torque it will destroy all the good work that you have done on your rebuild to save a lousy $15 for new bolts.

If you're not using all new rod cap bolts, you're asking for trouble anyhow.

c/6
Hooty
