I have a Evinrude 140 Model No - E140TRLCTE Serial No - J0286775 1983 I believe. Accidentally reversed battery cables. I have checked regulator/rectifier and it is burnt out. How would I check if I have damaged the Stator.

Currently do not have a Workshop Manual, but it is on order.

Any help Appreciated.
Thanks Lee

Replace the rectifier/regulator, then run engine on hose and check for 14.0+ vdc across the battery terminals. If the voltage is OK, then so is the stator.

FLETCHER140
There are ohm readings for your stator which I can't access right now.I do know you should see no reading between any stator lead and ground.
I also agree..replace the rectifier and test run it.I've replaced many, and the stator is fine.

DHPMARINE

Re: Evinrude 140 not charging battery

Thanks for the quick reply Jim, I wasn't sure that if I replaced the rectifier and the stator was damaged it would kill the new one.

Is there a way to test the stator anyway? so if necessary I could order the parts together. I can almost guarantee that they won't have the parts locally.

DHPMarine, I will give that a try, measuring from stator leads to ground. If all O.K. go ahead with replacing rectifier, thanks for your help.

Lee

Replaced the Rectifier today, ran engine with hose, voltage slowly increases at battery. From around 12.5 to 12.7 volts in around 10 mins. Is this normal? I was expecting to read 13+ volts at battery. (based on previous experience with car batterys)

When you are on the water running full out, the volts will increase. As long as you see an increase, you're OK. Mine does not show a significant increase until about 3500 RPM's. Don't rev it that high, unless you are on the water.

The stator can be checked with a VOM ... the input to the regulator/rectifier is AC. Check the shop manual for the voltage to look for, but it obviously will be significantly higher than the DC output from the regulator.

You should get more than 12.5 to 12.7 vdc at idle, unless you have a bunch of electrical load. A normal, fully charged battery at rest is around 12.68 vdc.

Check the stator output and also check the wiring/terminations between the motor and battery (including the grounds.)
