I have a 2001 150 oceanpro V6. Has thermostats.
Two weeks ago I meet Mr. Sandbar( Don't ask, yes I admit it. :( ). I took it to the guys who I got my boat from,a while back. They checked it out. Found sand all the way up in the Thermostats ( woe is me). So I told them to go ahead and fix it. They claimed they replaced the impeller ,flushed the system and replaced the thermostats( I say claimed cause I'm starting to have doubts. As luck would have it...I went out today( I live is South Fla, so every weekend is a boating weekend) after about 20 minutes into the ride the engine started to heat up. It shot up around 200F. The alarm didn't go off. I saw the temp and backed it down(I was keeping an eye on it cause it was just repaired). Temp went back down to 180. Basically did a little fishing and crawled home. I got home and opened the thermostat. IT HAD SAND!!GRRRR  I called the guy who fixed my boat and said WTF. There shouldn't be any sand in there. He told me that it sometimes gets into the heads and it's hard to get out. THat he would have to remove heads and clean them as well. I smell $$$$ in this guy's head.
OK...can I flush my own system and see if I get the sand out myself?? THe telltail has water coming out of it, so it's not blocked or anything. Also...could it be that it had some sand left and it clogged up the thermostat again?? In which case they're probably hosed?? I'm also thinking that maybe this guy didn't replace the old ones and just basically cleaned them up.
Any recommendations and procedures would be highly welcomed and appreciated. :)

By the way...from the looks of this place...you guys have a nice home here. I plan to make it mine for a long time.

Always be humble and gracious to the people who let you into their home. :)

And we are happy that you chose us as your source of info for outboard repair Jquest. Welcome!.

What ya' might try is to remove the t-stats and cover and put the muffs on the engine and crank up. Let the water flush out through the t-stat holes for a few minutes. May help flush out any trapped sand. Put just the t-stat covers back on and run her again on fresh water. Let it run for a while. The extra pressure from the hose and muffs might be enough to flush out any pacted sand.

Re-install the t-stats and run the engine and watch for abnormal temps.

Keep us posted. Good Luck!.

If you have a way to supply water to the engine at home remove the thermostats clean them and reinstall them.Start it let it run for a little while turn it off.Remove both thermostats checkem to see if sand is still getting to them.IF they are how much if its a little you may have already passed most of it thru it or what they wheren't able to finish getting out when they worked on it.I'd probably run it and remove the thermostats Afew times to see how much if any sand shows up.Hope this helps you I'd try this first if I was worring about money.

You can remove the t'stats and watch the water and some sand flow out, but the best way to "clean the pipes" is to remove both thermostats and springs. Reinstall the plastic covers and go run the hell out of the engine on the water for about 1/2 hour.(run it like you stole it) Then reinstall the t'stats. 90% of the time, that does the trick and your motor runs cool again.

Let us know how things turn out.

thank you for all the help guys. ONe question. What about the o-ring that the T-stats go into?? Do I have to remove those aswell or leave them there? I'm afraid they might pop off and get stuck somewhere in the engine. And the telltail. IT looks like it screws into the back of the engine. If I get a rush of sand coming out without the t-stats in there....I'm afraid it might plug up that little exit hole. Should I remove it while I flush the engine??

I forgot to mention the tell-tale. Remove it and run the motor on a flusher for just a minute or so. Any sand in the pump or water tube will come right out the tell-tale hole. In severe cases, you may see packed sand inside, just carefully poke it out, then run the motor. Look inside the threaded tell-tale fitting and make sure to clean it out also.
