Well, the 88 SPL has been dying at WOT as I have reported in prior post. Today I rebuilt the fuel pump, the motor still lags at WOT. Runs like a bat outta hell with the primer held in.
I took the boat out of the water and trailerd it home. I took off the carbs and then the float bowls. 1 carb did have rust looking gung in the bottom of it by the needle valve (that is the one under the float, right?)
I have the manual but I dont feel comfortable rebuilding the carb so I'm going to take the carbs to the local wrench and have him rebuild them. Its been 30 years since I messed with carbs.
Any suggestions or things to look for that havent been covered?
Thanks in advance.

I think ya' found the problem TPD. Carbs on your engine ain't all that hard to rebuild. Nothing magic about it. Really the only moving part is the float.

Strip it down and remove the jets, blow carb cleaner through all passages and follow up with compressed air.

Set the floats level and your good to go.

You can get a generic service manual and most of them will guide you through the process.

Seasy :D :D

I'm having a local marine mechanic rebuild them. I dont have the tools to get the small parts out.
Plus I feel better if a qualified person does it.
Thanks for the support. ;)

Make sure you get proper instruction on the sync/link after you get the carbs back on. This is a very important part of the carb o/h. I think you might also have the recirculation valves behind the carbs screwed into the manifold. There is one for each cylinder with a small hose going to it. Now is the time to clean those out.

Good luck,
dl

The hard part of a carb rebuild is usually getting the carbs off and back on resynched with the linkages. You have done all the hard work and farmed out the easy stuff

Well, since I'm paying to have the carbs rebuilt I'll just take the boat to his shop and have him put the carbs on and resynch/link them.
I was real careful when I took the link cables off and photographed them (digital) for reference.
I assumed I just bolt them back on at the exact location I took them off and all would be ok.

Ok, I picked up the carbs today and put them on this evening.
I started the motor on the mufflers and the carbs leaked from the bowl.
Took everything off to get to carbs, took them off and tightened the bowl screws, not real tight but taught.
I used a clamp on the fuel lines instead of zip ties.
Put all back together and started again, still leaks from bowls. Not pouring out leakage but more like seepage. I can see the edge of the bowls get moist when looking at it with a flashlight. There is enough to get the bowls wet. :(
Im wondering if new gaskets were installed or not. They look new but I didnt take the bowls off the carbs to check.
I'm taking the whole boat to mechanic so he can correct his leakage.
Needless to say I'm pissed.
These folks are convenient as they are less than a half mile from my house. I have some friends that take there stuff to them and no complaints. I hope this is a isolated incident if they want my business.
Well see

BTW.
The linkage appeared correct when I put it all back together but a water test is in order once the leaking carbs are corrected.

If the carbs have black plastic bowls, they may need to be "re-surfaced" using 220 grit paper on a large piece of glass. Most of the time, overtightening the screws warp the bowls. Retro fitting to the aluminum bowls is also a solution, but an expensive one, plus you need to buy new midrange jets to fit.

The new factory bowl gaskets are a thick brown rubber-like material.

Dropped boat and motor off at the mechanic.
He is surprised the bowls are leaking and will take care of the problem, no cost, first thing Friday morning.
He did say if he had to he has metal bowls he can put on.
The weekend is salvaged. :p

Sounds like at least you have a good tech. who stands behind his work. You might as well have him do a link and sync while your there, that way if you get out on the water and it is not right you won't have to take it back and lose more time on the water. It has to do with the the carbs opening in "synch" with the timing advance, just looking at the linkage wouldn't really tell you unless you tested for proper link and synch. Good luck.

Picked up boat from the mechanic this afternoon. He did what ya'll suggested and I passed it on to him. I told him about this forum and the great people on it who were knowledgable and helpful. I told him about using a section of glass to see if the bowls are warped.
He got a piece of black glass from a shop next to his and said there was light coming between the float bowls and the glass. He sanded the glass as I suggested to him and that took care of the problem.

I'll put the boat in the water in the morning for a weekend of cruising. Its gonna freeze tonight but have a expected high of 55-60 tomorrow. High of 75 expected on Sun. The crappie are going back out to deeper water with this cold weather.

iboats forum comes thru again..... :)

Took the boat out today.
It's running fine, smooth thru the power band.
RPM tops out at 5100 now when trimmed correctly.

Fished for a few hours, not a nibble. I didnt have any shiners or shrimp which is what the Crappie are hitting on.
