Mike....I'm taking for garanted you have the battery hooked up to the starter solenoid and are jumping the solenoid to crank?

What do you know about the motor as far as recent maint.?

Try getting a spary bottle with some premix in it and blow some in the carb throats. If it starts, you have a fuel problem.

Check the primer solenoid little red handle is straight back along the solenoid and not turned out. This would flood the engine.

Check your spark. The spark to each cylinder should jump a 1/2" gap with a hot white spark.

Do a compression test just fer grins. The compression on each cylinder should be 10 to 15% of each other.

When you say no wire harness, I would assume the large red connector in the engine area has noting connected to it.

Keep us posted....thanks.

i have a "momentary on",red push button switch that i wired to the selanoid, so that when i push it , the starter spins. you wrote, and i qoute"Check the primer solenoid little red handle is straight back along the solenoid and not turned out. This would flood the engine" um, im not getting this ,im slow, what is the primer selanoid?
i have no compression guage as of yet...
and yes, the large red connector is unconnected

what adverse affects would using this starter on the newer motor have.? starter is from a 1970 85hp v4 and new motor is a 1980 50hp 2 cylinder? it fits perfectly. i dont wanna ruin the engine before spring time comes.....

Whoops!! My mistake Mike. Yers don't have a primer solenoid. Just choke plates. Thinking of my 50hp.

If the starter fits and is engaging the flywheel gear OK, shouldn't be any adverse affects.

Sounds like you have the "push button" OK.

JB did a FAQ on "My Motor Won't Start". Real good info there. It's on the main menu of forums, the very first one. Check out the few things I posted and if it still don't start, give JB's post a go.
