Can someone give me a run down on replacing the water pump in a 1988 25Hp Evinrude? The motor hasn't been used in 2yrs so I want to change it. Is this a big job, is there any other seals that I need to replace upon disassembling the lower end?
Thanks

Re: Water pump replacement

springbok..mu man....ya' really need to get a service manual. But.....

Before trying to drop the lower unit, remove the intake screens from the lower unit. Behind these is where you disconnect the shift rod. You'll need a couple 1/2 wrenches (think 1/2"). Separate the connection. If your really careful, you can save the keeper. It will be a little plastic do-hickey at the end of the shift rod. Don't force it to much or it'll snap in half.

Once the shift rod is separated, remove the retaining bolts from the lower unit and it "should" drop down.

Keep us posted. Good Luck.

Re: Water pump replacement

I got the lower end off no problem but I didn't notice a keeper on the end of the shift rod? The seals that sit on the shaft are in really good shape, the rubber is not damaged and it is soft. Should I bother to replace them? I'm going to replace the gasket inside the water pump and the one between the pump and the lower case. I also inspected the impeller and it's perfect, the rubber is nice and soft and flexable. I don't think it needs replacement either.
Thanks

Not to jump in on OBJ's reply, but

No need to relace them if they are in good shape. Never replaced mine unless they became hard or brittle. REPLACE the impeller even if it looks good. They take a "Set" than you cannot see and will overheat at high speeds.

Re: Water pump replacement

When they turn a certain way for along time, they tend to stay in that direction permanantly("Set" in that direction). You may or may not be able to see it with the naked eye, but they do not seal as they should when turned the same way for a long period of time. Best I can explain it. Best whenever you have the lower unit pulled. replace it. Cheap insurance for the future. I had a 1989 28 HP Johnson and the impeller looked fine. Fins straight, soft and all, but it would not put out at high speed due to the flexing of the vanes on athe impeller. Due as you feel, but I believe that the majority of members and dealers would recommend replacement, espacially when you have the lower unit apart. I know I contradicted my previous statement, but mine was only 6 month old at the time. Then there was no need for replacement in that short period.
