let me start with a disclaimer - i am very new to the outboard hobby and have a very limited knowledge about even what i am talking about.

with that out of the way;

i have a 1954 Johnson cd-11 5 1/2 hp and i want to replace the points and condensors as i see everyone usually does. i have them on order and should be arriving shortly.

the problem i am having is i cant seem to get into where the old ones are to replace.

i have the books on this and they show the exploded view and i have removed the nut on top and the three screws but the top still does not come off. i can see them in there, but i will be dogged if i can get at them. could someone please provide a basic lesson on how to accomplish this task for me

thanks, bill

Hi, Bill.

Welcome to the world of the backyard outboard wrenches.

You need to remove the flywheel. The correct way is with a flywheel puller, but some of us use the following method. Use it at your own risk.

Back the flywheel nut off until it is flush with the end of the crankshaft. With a mallet (NOT a metal hammer) rap the end of the crank smartly while applying light prying pressure on the flywheel. It will usually pop loose from the flywheel taper within two or three raps.

Good luck. :)

Re: How to replace Points and condensor

Hi bill, I started my outboard life with an old fifties Johnny and had a lot of fun making or rebuilding the oldies. The best thing I did was when I upgraded to a Johnny with no points or condenser. When you make that transition you will find that you have more time to fish or cruise. Good Luck

Bill:

When you do the "Cranckshaft-end-rap-trick" make someone else lift flywheel to the upper end of the up/down play, or force it upwards, using a large screwdriver or similar against the block, thats what JB ment by applying pressure.

Do the safe thing and get a puller. You really don't want to buy a flywheel, when you can get a cheap puller.

Bill,
When you get the flywheel off,if there are any cracks in the two coils,replace them.Also replace the plug wires and the plugs.Now you have a NEW ignition system!!
DHPMARINE
