electric sending unit for outboard??

Hello every body!! I wanted to know if you could connect a electric sending unit to a 1979 evinrude 55HP out board?? If you can do you need a special gas tank?? The reason why I ask is I want to install a gas guage. Thanks for the help!!

That depends on your fuel tank, not on your motor... in fact the motor is more or less redundant to this discussion.<br /><br />Depending on what tank you have, you might have some options.. I have seen online that you can buy fuel caps for portable tanks that have an electronic sender unit in the cap...<br /><br />something like that would do nicely.<br /><br />what tank do you have now?<br /><br />rgds<br /><br />Franki

Thanks for the fast reply!! The tank I have is a portable 6 gal tank. Could I have the link to that web site thanks!!

Sandollar <br /><br />It can be done, but I think its of no use on a 6 gallon tank. Just keep an eye on it. If you were determined to do it, you would need to get a sending unit, gauge and hook it up to the dash. Also, unless you could rig it to the filler opening, you would have to cut a hole in the tank for the sender. I kinda feel it's not worth it on such a small tank...
