Johnson 9.5 trouble

Please help...I bought a 1964 Johnson 9.5 and took it out for the first time today. After several pulls it started, but will not stay that way. I can always restart it, but here is what is happening. It will start with full choke, but will cut down if choke is pushed in. It will start without the choke and idle for awhile but will cut off on its own or cut off when I put it into gear. There were a few moments where I ran the motor in gear with full choke and it is surging and then quitting. Basically no matter what setup I had, the motor is quitting. I used a new fuel/oil mixture 50:1 and to the best of my knowledge there should be no problem with that. I also tried all settings for the mixture with no differences. This is my first small outboard and I am at a loss. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Johnson 9.5 trouble

Time for a carb overhaul grh. The carb high speed jet is probably plugged up. Pulling out on the choke forces the gas up to keep it running. Carb kits are still available for your 9.5. Might entertain the thought of a service manual also.

Keep us posted if ya' need more help.

Sounds like it's time for a carb rebuild and cleaning. Very simple on that motor. By holding the choke in, it means you are not getting the gas from the carb that you should be. It's stopped up with gunk. Get a rebuild kit and have at it. Just go slow and take it easy. Carb spray is a must and compressed air will help to blow out the passages.

You need carb kit number 382048 from here. $18.00:

web page Page Loads Slow...

Thanks for the info OBJ...I am fairly mechanical but I am definitely a newbie...How hard is a carb job for someone like me?

Re: Johnson 9.5 trouble

thanks for the help...I will order the carb kit...Except for what I mentioned, the motor seems okay; shifts fine etc. Any advice on the mixture (rich/lean)or other things I could do to keep the motor running good?

grh,

Don't forget about rebuilding or replacing your fuel pump if a rebuild kit isn't available, wasn't for me. a replacement fuel pump will cost you about 30 or 40 bucks, and it's new design is smaller......just thought you might want to know, hey an ignition overhaul wouldn't hurt either, about 100-120 bucks :D

Re: Johnson 9.5 trouble

grh,
i still say fuel pump as well. to my knowledge of these old motors, if you rebuild the carb., rebuild the fuel pump...also, make sure you put a clear in-line fuel filter on the fuel hose after the bulb and before the motor, that way you can see...most people don't do this because it is not included with motors when they buy a new set...try it, it will keep your clogging down exponentially!!!
