The battery is not charging. I put a new stator and rectifier. Right before it quit charging the volts went to 17 or 18 volts and then quit charging all together. Does this have anything to do with the clipper circuit? The engine is a 1972 Johnson 85hp V4.

Re: CLIPPER CIRCUIT

I beleive the clipper circuit can be removed with no ill effects. Put in a search at the top of the page for clipper circuit. There were a few replys to this.

Re: CLIPPER CIRCUIT

The clipper is sort of a voltage regulator that helps protect the ignition amplifier from damage due to power surges. It'll run without it, but you remove that protection and the amplifier is over $300. If you remove it, make absolutely certain that you have a healthy battery and that all of the connections are clean and tight.

Re: CLIPPER CIRCUIT

Maybe you should try and figure out why you were getting 17-18 volts, before removing the clipper circuit, it sounds to me like the clipper is doing it's job and your problem is that you are getting that excessive voltage. Good luck.

Re: CLIPPER CIRCUIT

At what point did you replace the stator, and rectifier? Before the voltage surge, or after? The clipper protects the system from voltage spikes. A failed clipper will cause an under charged, or dead battery, even though charging system is good. An inoperative pulse pack. or open or intermittant battery circuit. Will blow main fuse, and fuse continues to blow. You really need a OMC service manual to trouble shoot this system. There is a bench test on that clipper, at my rate, it would take me all night to type them out. In closing, check the lead from the new stator that it is not being rubbed by the flywheel. This is a close fit, and the lead is held down by a clip. Come back with more of what you have done at this point.

They quit using that clipper circuit in '77 or '78, I think, 'cause it didn't do all that much good.

c/6
Hooty

Re: CLIPPER CIRCUIT

The clipper circuit was only used on the battery CD units in 70, 71 and 72 I believe. The ignition went to a mag CD in 73.

Re: CLIPPER CIRCUIT

R. Johnson:
The problem started when a distributer screw vibrated out and was sheared off by the fly wheel. The head of the screw tore the top of the stator up. I replaced the stator with new screws. It ran about 14Volts at home and on water the voltage went high and then quit. I replaced the rectifier and it is still not charging. Thanks for your help!

Re: CLIPPER CIRCUIT

DAS
As we are not there and can not test your systems, it's hard to say. With these models one circut sort of depends on the others (to a point). In other words if you have a problem with a battery you could loose an amplifier, etc. What happens is most folks tend to treat the symtoms and never descover the cause. They end up like a pup chasing it's tail. They end up spending a whole bunch on parts and nothing on tests. You need a manual to walk you through the testing procedure from start to finish. You need to start with the specified battery, in good condition. I can send you some testing proceduers if you post your e-mail address. I also feel that the aftermarket manuals do a very good job of explaining this system. But again you will have to sit down and study the book and get a lineal picture.

Re: CLIPPER CIRCUIT

If everything checks good , but system is not charging, remove the clipper, but make sure all connections are clean and tight. As I stated before, a bad clipper will stop the system when all else checks good.
