Re: johnson 60hp vro

Hi Oilman
It sounds like this problem might be flooding. T his may be cause by a float adjustment or maybe improper starting procedure. Check starting procedure for cold, warm and hot start. Then check the primer system. The look at the carbs again.

Oilman....next time it does this, check for spark. Maybe a problem with a charge coil or power pack getting hot and not working again until after cool down.

And are you sure the engine isn't running to warm? You should be able to place your fingers on the flat area ontop and just forward of the head for several seconds with out pulling them away.

Keep us posted...thanks.

Re: johnson 60hp vro

Have now tried to start the engine with a pull cord and started no problem then stopped it and tried the key again turned over fine but not firing tried the rope pull again started no problem could this be a coil problem and only happening when warm as the resistance is increased when warm

Re: johnson 60hp vro

Hi Oilman
I would look into the key switch, starter circut, etc. If this were coil related the motor would not start via rope either. A defective switch,or wiring may cause a short (ground out ignit) or cause the primer to function improperly. When you push in on the key it should activate the primer or choke depending on model. If the key switch is allowing the primer to function W/o your command, this could flood a warm or hot engine. When you rope start the motor you by-pass the primer, unless you manualy flip the red lever on the primer selenoid.

Re: johnson 60hp vro

Thanks for the advice...When I push the key in I can hear the primer/choke cutting in and on checking the plugs dont seem excessivley wet. I tried the engine again after a couple of hours yesterday when it had cooled down and it started fine of the key but same thing again after it had warmed up.....  :(

Re: johnson 60hp vro

So what ya' got oilman is:

1. Starts with key switch cold OK.
2. Warms up and won't restart with key sw. but will start with rope.
3. Cools down and will start with key sw. again until it gets warm.

To start with the rope, you need to have the key in the "ON" position unless you disconnect the wire harness. Is this what you do...leave the key sw. in "ON"?

Re: johnson 60hp vro

OBJ, me thinks the key switch is bad. Whadda you think??? Switch gets warm and shorts out after running for awhile. Those switches do funny things when they go bad. It's cheap start to replace it. Oilman, Tell us your EXACT starting procedure when you rope start it...

Re: johnson 60hp vro

That engine has self contained ignition and must crank over at least 300 rpm in order to engage the ignition circuit. You have mentioned nothing about slow or normal cranking speed (unless I've overlooked it).

If slow cranking is a factor when warm, check all of the terminal connections, at the battery and elsewhere. Just because they seem tight doesn't mean that those connections are as they should be. A tight connection may be tight but also dirty with corrosion.

I mention this as you say the engine starts fine manually when that "no start" problem is encountered.

Re: johnson 60hp vro

Thanks for the prompt reply guys the exact starting procedure is
cold....small amount of throttle (the flat lever next to the combination gear and throttle lever)turn key to first position and press in for 6 seconds and the turn key to fire...when cold fires ok
warm....same as above but without pressing key in for 6 seconds and no throttle (although i have tried with both and dont make any difference)and engine turns over at normal speed but no sign of even trying to fire.
warm rope start....turn key to first position small amount of hand throttle one wind of rope on the flywheel and away it goes no problem....
Me thinks im going to have the switch out later today so ill keep you posted thanks again...Harry

Re: johnson 60hp vro

As Joe asked, is the Battery up to par and connections tight and clean, starting from the battery back to the selonoid and then to the starter???
