Re: 70hp Johnson Sea horse

Hey Ryan....how ya' doin?

The 70hp three cylinder goes back to 1974. These are the early loopers that didn't get as much attention as the later day V's for being loopers.

If maintained and cared for, they are good running, smooth engines. Fact I had a customer bring one in once to my shop. Ran so well I wanted to buy it off him but he wouldn't sell.

But....before buying, get the year. Find the model number on the transom bracket and post it here. We can tell ya' what year it is. Also, I would asked to have a wrench of your choice check it out top to bottom if you folks aren't familiar with things like that. This should give you all some idea as to what shape the engine is in. If you need more help, don't hesitate to post.

Good Luck!! OBJ

Thanks for the reply, OBJ.

I don't have the numbers off the motor, I'm going to get them sometime in the next week.

Would you happen to know the last year the "Sea Horse" was produced?

Re: 70hp Johnson Sea horse

Well actually Ryan, I don't think there is a last year. Johnsons', since I can remember, have always been known as "Sea Horse". Just look at the new emblem on new Johnsons'. Like an "S" with a horse head. Looks like a horse on some bad crack. :D

Just a good alround engine. May not git ya' there quick as a Merc...but....IMHO...the Johnny/Rudes are a lot more forgivin'.

Let us know when ya' get the Model number.

the Johnson logo has been the seahorse since the early '50s. You can see how the artistry changed over the years.

The 3 banger 70 has been produced from '74, like OBJ said, until 2001. It was derived from the 3 cyinder 55hp that was introduced in 1968.

That's a 1982 engine, Ryan.

The looper triples by OMC were among the best designs ever.
