I have a 1994 Johnson 48 special. I bought the Seloc Manual for Johnson/Evinrude outboards 1990-95 repair manual. The manual stated that this size engine uses the "B" carburetors but the carburetors on the engine do not look anything like the pictures in the book.
On the left side of the carbs. on the engine there is a raised circle with the numbers 339 over 169 within the circle. There is a also a Raised letter D2 next to the circle. The carbs also have a plate with gasket on top of the carbs and the fuel lines are on top of the carbs.
There are adjustment screws above the throtle links. Are these the idle adj. screws? Does anyone know anything about the carbsuretors?

Nash

They are probably low speed fuel/air mixture adjustment screws. I have them on my 91 70 HP rude, too. I wouldn't mess with them if it's running good. That's about all I can tell you as I've never had to adjust mine. If it works, don't mess with it. Are you having problems that we need to know or just curious? Glad to help if you need it on that or anything else.

The problem I am having with the engine is the usual thing with an outboard that has not been run often enough. It will not idle and the only way to keep it running at idle is to press the start/electric choke in for a second and then release it, doing this as often as needed for idle.

I bought a bottle of carb cleaner, the type specified for 2 cycle engines that is added to the fuel tank. An outboard engine repair shop said that it sounded like the low speed jets were clogged and to run a tank of fuel through the engine and if that didn't fix it he would re-build the carbs.

Nash,Sounds like these are the low speed mixture screws.Turn them in slowly and count the turns until you feel them GENTLY bottom out.Remove them, and the top plates.Spray all passages well with carb spray. Then replace the screws to their original settings.Next drain the carbs thru the bowl drains, and flush well.
If this shortcut doesn't work rebuild the carbs.
If your model number is 48eslerd,order the real manual from your dealer #500608.Good investment for $30.00.
DHPMARINE

I gotta tell ya, Nash. The additives almost never work. I would go ahead and tear the carbs down and rebuild them now. DHP has the right idea to start, but I wouldn't count on it working. That gunk in the jets tends to stay there, unless you either soak them in carb cleaner or spray them out with cleaner and compressed air. If you can move the floats up and down when you take the float covers off, at least you know the float needles are not sticking. If you can spray some cleaner up into the float needle areas, that would be even better. It's really the luck of the draw! Good Luck and let us know how it goes...

Thanks guys on the replies about the carb cleaner. As to the OMC (real manual #500608)I think you are right on that one, the Seloc that I ordered from this site is okay but is very generic in the fact that is is covers all OMC engines (1990-1995 1 to 50 HP engines)

I will try the flush out as suggested first and run the engine and if that does not work then heed your advise and re-build the carbs.

Again...thanks,
