does my motor have a pressure relief bypass value that may have melted when the motor overheated and where is it on the motor

Give us a clue. Evinrude made a lot of different models in 1977.

sorry the motor is a 77 25 hp evinrude and the reason i am asking is that i have replaced the impeller and the therostat. the motor pees good but the block still seems to be real hot. the water coming from the telltale is cool any advise on where to look for any problems please help

Yoour motor is supposed to get to 140-150 degrees. When you start it on the muffs with the cover off and it gets to operating temp you should be able to put your finger on the head for no more than a few seconds. To be sure go to your local dealer and get some temp sticks.

If I feel a powerhead is running hot, I sprinkle a bit of water on the top above the cylinders. If the water steams or boils away, it's definately too hot. That's the "default" method...when you have nothing else at hand to test the temperature more accurately.
